it's because he has a 2wd truck, and a 4wd tranny/t-case. to make it 4wd, you'd need all the guts in the front end

would probably take a bit of mount fabrication...i'd just put the engine in and find a tranny in the junk yard

do the 2wd trannies match up the same as the 4wd? And why would the 4wd tranny not work? Does the front driveshaft create a seal which means it needs to be attached? The need for mount fab. would be for the 4wd tranny is what your saying right? I thot all the engines mounted the same...

72-75 engines have different motor mounts than 76-80 engines. (81+ engines are basically the same as 76-80 as well) The mounts are just not in the same place. You also have to deal with differences in the exhaust routing and getting the fuel line and throttle cable over to the other side of the engine bay, and a handful of other things that I'm probably forgetting about. The early style motor was quite a bit different from the later style, so the 4x4 trans is the least of the trouble. I don't think the front driveshaft slips into the seal like the rear, so at least on that you shouldn't have to worry.

My truck is a 72, and I went down to get tune up parts. The wires and stuff wouldnt fit. Went back and the guy told me my motor was a 79, but it doesnt look like the motor mounts had been changed :?:

My truck is a 72. When I bought it....it had no motor. I bought a 4x4 from the junkyard that had been rolled. I pulled the motor and trans together and put them in the back of the truck. I had the truck towed to the shop where the mechanic welded a plate across the orginal frame mounts. You see, the 4x4 moter ( I belive a 1979 ) sat further back than the orginal motor. I had to buy a clutch cable because the original motor was hydraulic. I used the original driveline and exehaust. I had to cut the 4x4 shift handle ( the one that puts it into 4 wheel drive ) off so that I could use the tranny. I have been using this set up for a year now with no problems....but would still prefer a non 4x4 tranny.
Hope this helps.

thx for the help guys...just curious what the diff is between 2wd and 4wd trannies except the obvious...why would u prefer a 2wd? Also does anyone know if 2wd tranny will mount up on an engine which originally had a 4wd tranny?

The size of the rear transmission seal in the rear differs from the 2wd to the 4wd trannies, if you try to use the 2wd driveshaft on a 4wd tranny (or vice versa) they wont fit right. I cant remember which, but I think it is the 2wd setup where the seal and the driveshaft collar are smaller in diameter. Plus I think I also remember noticing that the 2wd and 4wd trannies differ in length, so your driveshaft has to be matched up anyway. Now that I am thinking about it, I think the tail shaft/driveshaft splines are different as well (larger for 4wd i think).

The front driveshaft U joints bolt to a plate attached to a shaft that stays attached to the transfer case (unless you take it apart). It wont slide off like the rear driveshaft.

You will have to relocate the motor mounts. I cannot remember about the tranny mount, but I would assume you would need to do something there as well, if the 4wd tranny is longer like I am thinking.
