Hi,
I own a 79 chevy luv w/factory electric pump. The pump looks after market; it seems fine when I bench test it; but, when it is in truck, it only works when it wants to. Does anybody know where these pumps get their power? are they wired through the igition switch? need help asap.

The fuel pump has a relay thats behind the metal cover on the passenger side fenderwell of the engine compartment. Clean the connector to the relay, it may just be a dirty connection.

That relay is tied into the voltage regulator as well. It uses the regulator to tell if the motor is spinning or not so the pump will cut out in an accident that stops the motor. Don't want fuel pumping into the engine compartment and causing a fire, nor do you want the pump running if you leave the motor idling and it happens to die.

I believe there is also a bypass so that the pump will run when the key is turned to start.
