I bought a 79 luv from the boneyard st. louis oklahoma for $250 put in some gas and a battery and off i went. Got about 3 miles and blew all the water out the cap. went to town and got another still got hot, changed water pump and thermostat and bypassed the heater core and is still boiling over what should I check next.

I know this might sound a little dumb but you might want to check out your radiator... I mean there is a possibility that it can be clogged up with many years of crap :? You just never know, I had the same problem with mine overheating as well, so I started doing all the normal checks and finally pulled the head to check and see if it was warped or cracked. Well when I got the head off there was a HUGE chunk of silicon stuck in one of the water passages, now I am not saying that this could happen to you but I would get the radiator checked and then after that I would start looking at the head, since LUVs seem to be notorious for warped and cracked heads...... and that is just my opinion  Well hope this might have helped.

When mine started heating up the first summer I had it, the radiator was partially plugged. Pulled the radiator and had a 3 row core installed. Never overheats now. Even in August driving around town with the air conditioner running. You could try a reverse flush on the radiator yourself before pulling it.

do a compression check on the engine.
make sure you don't have a blown head gasket. especially if it boiled the water. that means it got hot......and we ALL know what happens when a luv engine gets a little hot.......

head warpage. :(

Maybe thats why it went to the Junk yard in the first place.

Hope it not a blown head gasket.
If over pressureing alot then head gasket. Ck spark plugs see if one has a lot of white gunk on it.

also ck to make sure hose is not collasping bu this wouldnt cause it to overpressurize.

What does it mean when your hose collapses after turning the car off and letting it sit and the top radiator hose collapses. Shane

Shane

probably need to replace the hose.
Check the fluid level. If you don't have enough it might collapse it.

Like running hot water into an empty milk jug, dumping the water, replace the cap and stick it in the fridge. Once the air inside cools...the jug collapses.

hose collaspe is when you rev up the motor and the hose is to soft it restricts the water getting sucked up.It squeezes down. Some hoses have a wire coil inthere to prevent collapse.
Or Radiator is plugged and you suck up all the water than is being supplied.

more likely the head gasket is going. But rev up the motor and can ck

It only does it when the car cools down. I found a crack in the top inlet on the radiator itself, would this cause it to collapse like that. Shane

If the crack was all the way through, it would let air in as the engine cooled off and the hose wouldn't collapse. Buy a new hose that has a wire coil in it if you can find it.

I would take the hose off and check to see if its kind of floppy anyway. I'm thinking the hose is shot and it doesn't have anything to do with that crack you found, although thats not so good either. It may be ballooning to normal size when you're engine is running and coolant is running through it, only to collapse when you turn your engine off and the coolant has a chance to settle. The hose should be taught whether or not the engine is running, so if you take it off and it flops around, time for a new hose.
