 Post subject: oil pressure wire
PostPosted: Tue Apr 20, 2004 9:25 pm
I noticed that my oil light never came on even when the key was on and engine was not running. I checked the sending unit and foung that there was no wire hooked to it. I found a wire close to it but the light still didn't come on when I hooked it up so I think it is the wrong wire. Does anyone know what color the wire is on an 80 4x4 or are they all different?? and how do I check to see if the bulb is burnt out?? Is it a typical instrument panel connection in the back?? Thanks for any help.

The oil pressure switch should have a yellow with white stripe wire. If thats the wire you found, try and ground it to the motor or jumper it to the ground terminal of the battery. It should then light the bulb when you turn the ignition switch on. If it lights with the wire grounded out, the pressure switch must be bad. If it doesn't light up, swap the bulb with the charge light bulb. You can find them on the back of the insturment panel rather easily. They bulb sockets can be removed by turning them a little and pulling them out. If the bulbs light the charge light but not the oil light, you most likely have bad wiring of some sort from the dash to the switch.
