sounds like you might have a different frame. i have an 80 and an 81 and from what i remember the 81 is angled from front to back and the 80 is angled from side to side. neither one is exactly sraight up and down. do you have torsion bars on the front and independent suspension or a straight axle. someone might have swaped frames to get a solid front axle. do you have the stock 1.8 isuzu motor?

a straight front axle looks like the rear axle. the torsion bars are long bars that run close to the frame. they start about midway under the cab and run up to the front a arms. a straight axle has leaf springs like the rear axle.

Your other posts say you have a 76 4x4, which didn't come from the factory as a 4x4. (79 was the first official year for 4x4 LUVs) That alone is enough to say it has to have some modifications. I'm betting it has a solid front axle, like 81luv said looks pretty much like the rear axle. Solid steel from one wheel to the other. A stock independent front suspension from a 4x4 LUV has an axle (the center section at least, where the driveshaft goes into it) that doesn't move with the wheels as you go over bumps. Then there are flexible joints that attach from that to the hubs where the wheels sit.

Seems kind of odd that someone would swap frames to get 4x4 and then swap the Isuzu motor back into a different frame. Makes me wonder what sort of frankenstein creation you have on your hands there. Is the gas tank on the driver's side of the truck just forward of the rear axle? If it is in a different spot that would tell us something. Also, on the motor is the valvle cover (top of motor, says Isuzu on it) black(might be painted different color) and made of sheet steel or is it aluminium? Aluminium would point to a newer Isuzu motor and maybe the source of the frame. They put carbureted motors in Isuzu pickups and Amigos up until about 93 I think and you were talking about carb problems so that narrows the field to just a few Isuzu motors if its not just simply the luv 1.8L.

Man if you could get some pics of this thing it might help to figure out what the heck it is.

i have the independant axles in the front,no leaf springs in the front, just springs and a arms, and the gas tank is located right in front of the axle and is on the drivers side fo the truck, and it has a skid plate in under it.the front end of the truck al;so has a skid plate.my valve coner says isuzu, and is black originally.

well that sounds like the isuzu frame, probably put a 76 body on a 79 or 80 4x4 frame. you said the gas tanks you were getting were too big? did you happen to get it off a long bed truck? the long bed trucks had a bigger gas tank. you should look for a gas tank off a 79 or 80 short bed truck. if you want i can take some pictures of the frame of my 80 to verify that you have a luv frame.

maybe the original tank rusted out and someone couldn't find another luv tank so they modified the truck to fit a different gas tank. i don't have a gas tank for my 80 but i remeber when i pulled the rusted out tank out it was a rectangle.

well i'd say i'm 99.9% sure that you have a luv frame. as for the gas tank, it must be from something other than a luv. maybe it could be a fuel cell? looks like your best option might be to get a luv tank and make it fit.

Sounds like a 79-80 frame with a 76 body on it. It might even just be the VIN tags from a 76 on a 79 truck. The gas tank should be a rectangle (probably just like what you've been finding off other trucks) and its held up with a couple bolts in the front and in the back. The skid plate under it (assuming stock skid plate) is the same size as the tank.

Sounds to me like you have a different tank and the frame was modded to fit it. It might be tough to get back to a stock tank without changing things to fit the stock tank again.

yeah the skid plate is the same size and one halkf of the skid plat is what holds th egas tank on.like what im saying is,3 bolts go on on side, and the the skid plate goes in under and then braces the gas tank up and then 3 bolts go in the skid plate.but everythiugn look as if it were factory.but the gas tank is square almost.
