 Post subject: door panels
PostPosted: Wed Mar 10, 2004 12:34 pm
my door panels are tore up and have huge speaker holes in them. I dont plan on putting speakers in the doors so I want to remove these old broken up ones and use them to trace on new material and make new ones without holes and such. Anybody ever done this? Any good suggestions for materials to do such a thing???

I am planning on doing this sometime in the future, but haven't thought that much about it.
you should be able to go to a car upholstry shop and ask them what material they use for new door panels.
we are lucky that ours are flat. easy to work with! :D

use some of that heavy duty cardboard stuff. the kind that has all the holes so you can hang stuff on it. that stuff looks like the stuff the original door panels were made out of. then just trace your door panel out and cut it out and cover it with whatever fabric yu want to use. you may want to put some kind of padding under the fabric. then just glue or staple the fabric to the backside.

I've seen an online site that sells plastic replacement door panels. Think it was of those that sell the dash caps.

fiber board, hard board, whatever you call it that is the stuff. I used to work at a mill that makes the stuff and it is perfect for door panels, speaker mounting (behind the seats on either side), and a raft of other uses I'm sure.

Basically though, you just need something solid and the right thickness. You could do them in diamond plate if you chose. Being flat, LUV door panels are really easy to make out of anything else that is also flat. Just be careful not to go too thick. You still have to get those door handles and window cranks back on there.
