Alrighty i have noticed a nice sound coming from my rear end. When coasting under partial throtle (just let up a little bit when the road goes down hills and stuff), theres a nice groan and rumble from the rear end. So does anybody have any experience rebuilding the diferential. I was thinking since its a third member i was just going to pull it out and take it to a shop.

with many people changing rears it might be more benificial to get a used one shipped to you. most shops won't do them and if they do they can foul them up.....the gears and setup kit will cost upwards of $250- $300....you should be able to get one shipped for cheaper than that....

I am gonna have to rebuild the one I have too. I was looking in the manual, and the tools required are not that special, and the manual is pretty detailed. I am gonna try to do it myself.

From my experience the pinion is usually what goes out, so you might not have to redo everything in there if it has just started. The only really difficult part I saw in the manual was the bit about some 300 ft/lbs of torque on the pinion nut. Might have to borrow/rent a big torque wrench and perhaps a gorilla to do that sucker.

I have never really heard of anybody rebuilding their rear-end. Usually when the wear out most guys would just swap a different axle in there. Its probably the same or less amount of work then rebuilding the rear itself. Try and find the whole setup, a good used one would work perfect. If not, then go to the rebuild, i think it will save you a lot of time to just find an axle though. And price wise i think it would be the same...

Does anyone know what the gear ratios are for the mid 90's Passports and Rodeos?

rebuilding diffs is not something you'll want to do as a novice. just the r&p and setup kit can run you over 300 bucks, and if you set the backslash or the pinion depth wrong it will destroy itself in short order. best to take it to a ring and pinion shop and have an expert do it

MEPR: Just don't forget that you have a front diff to match gears to with that 12 bolt. A good easy match would be a 4.56 12 bolt rear and then take a 4.56 8 bolt front third member out of a 84-86 (some early 87s) trooper. I'd say just swap in the 10 bolt front, but it looks like a pretty large fabrication project, much easier to just go SAS.

I think the 93-97 rodeos and passports had Dana 44 rears and came with 4.10 gearing stock. There are many options for gearing on a D44, but Isuzu used a bit different carrier setup, so swapping gears above 4.10 requires getting a different carrier as well as the ring and pinion. Front diff should be an Isuzu 10 bolt.

gear ratios in the Rodeo/Pasport and Amigos were 4.30s 4.56 and 4.77 i think. As far as the front third member, i was thinking about that too. I would have to find a 4.56 8bolt to match the 4.5612bolt...
