OK. I am towing my LUV half way across the country on a tow dolly.. "ok stop cringing and keep reading". And Yes I DID NOT disconnect the drive line :( . SO YES I WAS STUIPD never used a tow dolly before. So it still runs but wont move 8O . It starts up put it in gear , clutch all the way out and nothing wont budge but the enguine still runs does't die. " And yes the emergency brake is off. Could it be the tranny or the transfer case. I am leaning toward the tranny. Now I hafto lay on the cold cement of my Michigan garage to pull it out and drive 60 miles to have some one rebuild it."NOT HAPPY ABOUT THAT, BUT WE LEARN AS WE GO". Any one have one working in good shape for sale "cheep"? Any words of advise on this project would be helpful. Thanks.

I would have to say that you have probably given yourself a good reason to get a new tranny, or have the clutch and disks, bearings, and nearly anything that interfaces with the engine replaced on that one.

You probably burned out the clutch plate, the disk, the bearings, and anything in the bell housing. So that would mean when you take the tranny off, you will have a few inches of black soot fall out of the housing.

i'd have to agree on the clutch theory. i bet you completely toasted the clutch and probably the pressure plate. i doubt there is anything wrong with the transmission, they are pretty tough and a gear would have to strip to keep it from moving. i'd take a look at the clutch before you tear apart the tranny.

if the clutch was fucked out, wouldnt that mean if the tranny was in gear, the car would move? you just wouldnt be able to change gears

if it is a 4x4 are you sure the transfer case isn't in neutral????
if the truck was in neutral as you were towing the manual tranny none of the other stuff should have been turning.

every thing was in nutrel rolling freely. I is a 4 wheel drive i am hopeing it is the clutch plaey and stuff and not the tranny. being 3 degrees out this week it will be a while before I can get a look at it. From what i am reading it might be the clutch but every thing was in nutrel :?: Thanks for the replies it helps alot. any other thoughts are always welcome.

it being that cold I would look at the clutch arm and make sure it is releasing when you let go of the clutch....you might have some ice or sumpin in there.
put it in 4 wheel and see if it will pull. the body might be binding up against the shifter causing the transfer case to be in neutral.

OK I was just out side and found out something is broken. I can start it up and it runs as long as the clutch is pushed it. No Matter what gear the trany or diff is in even both in nutrel when I let out the clutch the engine starts to die. if i rev it up i can get the clutch all the way out but it still sounds like it is being bodged down i let up on the gas and it dies. No sign of wanting to move at all :?:

DOOD! your brakes might be frozen!!!!
My LUV did that a long time ago.
before taking anything apart you might want to check to see if the brakes are releasing.
if you engaged the parking brake this might be the problem.

I will check the brakes again but I roled it off the dolly and towed it about 20 feet to it resting spot now and can rock it and see the wheels move.

It is alright to tow a standard transmisson in neutral. An atuomatic you must remove the driveline. If you had wet roads with lots of spray, before you parked the truck for the evening, the brakes could be froze. Happens to me all the time trucking. Use a flare and heat the drums a little, and back up, this should brake them free. Never had a 4 wheel drive, but if the transfer case was in neutral also, I dont think that would be a problem.

So I Darined the oil from the transmission. I got about 1/2 a quort. Black with GOLD FLAKES. Looks like I struck Gold in my transmission. I have pics that I will post as soon as i can get my camera to work.
