didn't someone say something about a high speed air sensor or something on these carbs?

Could be the coil breaking down after it gets warmed up and not delivering a good enough spark.

Fuel pump wasn't mentioned, and the symptoms sound similar to a low flowing fuel pump. I've had a few of them go, and it sounds similar. You can cruise around all day if you keep the RPM low enough, but go through the gears accelerating up to highway speed and it dies like you shut off the key about the 3-4 shift.

It also could be a vac leak somewhere like perhaps the EGR valve. There is a thermo control vac switch right near the thermostat with hoses going in and out to the EGR valve and to the carb. Since that switch opens up after the truck warms, that would explain the timing of things. There is another thermo control switch in the air cleaner that worth checking out as well.

but the stuff 800xl mentioned will only be a CA vehicle. My 80 isnt CA and only has the air pump for emissions. But i would agree that the coil and fuel pump could be the culprit. I would also make shure the points clean, spray some electric contarc cleaner and run a lint free cloth between em and regap em and all that jazz.

it sounds like what mine was doing when i first got it. i would be driving down the highway and gradually it would loose more and more power. i thought fuel pump but the pressure was good, ended up being vaccum lines, had some rotten hoses that were cracked and leaking. its never messed up since.

Something often overlooked is the fuel line from the tank to the pump. It will sometimes get a small crack and suck air instead of fuel. If the body or hose gets twisted just right it will starve for fuel. And other times run fine.

 I will go with the vacuum hoses. I have had a problem where the fuel pump gets clogged.

Federal emission trucks do have EGR valves and the thermo control switches as well as the air injection pump. One of the switches on the air cleaner controls the hot air intake damper valve, that thing that makes it suck air across outside of the exhaust manifold when its cold. I've had a couple of them leak on me.

The parts I'm really thinking here are anything with a vacuum line going to it. A vacuum leak really seems like the best answer to the whole set of symptoms, and its not uncommon on these trucks to find cracked/rotten hoses. Replace lines and try capping off things one at a time to make sure some valve or part isn't leaking too.

You reminded me of a problem with a gasket on one of the places that gets supplied with the air. That was on my 77. I can't remember for the life of me where it was, but I think it was the carb gasket.
