Just picked up an 80 LUV that's been sitting in a barn for at least 15 years. Was very excited when we fired up the engine and it ran. Pulled the tank today only to be disappointed to find out it was full of holes. It was parked with a full tank of gas so I've got a dozen or so little holes all the way around.

Quickly looked online to see if there were replacement tanks. What was I thinking?

Has anyone successfully repaired a tank like this? I was thinking about trying some patch kits for the outside and then re-line the inside. Am I on the right path?

I used an Eastwood kit on one and it turned out good. You could also have one custom made.

The more I work on cleaning this tank...the worse things get. I think I'm up to about 15 holes not including the holes in the tubes. I was going to repair it using from patches on the outside and re-lining the inside. But now with several of the tubes rusted through, I don't know if this is worth even trying to repair.

If you had a welding or fab shop in your area you could have one made but it might be expensive. You could also try getting a good one from a junk yard in a non-rust belt state.

Or you could buy mine. It's from an 80 LUV 4x4 I've converted to electric.
Kept the gas tank - just because.
It's in excellent condition. Far as I can tell, has no leaks or rust.
Thought I might need an aux tank on my work truck someday or maybe for my 20KW generator for a longer run time.
But it's been sitting unused ever since. Probably needs a good home.
It's in Hampton, GA. PM me if you're interested.

I just bought a '79 4x4 without a fuel tank. Hard to find. If you still have the fuel tank from your '80 and willing to sell, I'd be interested. Thanks.

Has anyone gone the fuel cell direction? I looked into it a couple years ago, but I never followed through with it. they have 12 gallon tanks.. You might just have to dremel a hole for the sending unit... Possibilities!

I have a fuel tank out of a '79 truck. It was removed from the truck about 25 years ago and has been inside my heated garage ever since. It was drained when it was removed and looks to be in good shape but the vent tubes on top are pretty crusty. Still bolted to the mounting points which were cut to remove. I can send anyone interested some pics if you call or text me at (860)481-11fourfour. $125 plus shipping.
