Not my LUV, but a 1961 Mercedes with a Solex. I don't drive it in the winter and it hasn't been out of the garage since September but I crank it up and run it for 10 min every couple of months. The last two times, it wouldn't run without choke. I let it run with choke on for 10 min and as soon as I kill the choke the car dies. I can't restart unless choke is in.

Check for a vacuum leak. It's probably getting air from someplace so you are required to restrict the air through the carb. by choking it. Maybe a vac. line rotted and cracked.
