I have to change the timing to get it running then I can change it back to drive it. Old msd box had it for years. Bought new blaster coil and hooked it up. It ran fine after I installed it and then wouldn't start cold. I took it to my mechanic and he charged me $200 and told me not to run double platinum plugs at .045. So he put in the normal auto lite 65s. I picked it up from him and the next morning it wouldn't start.

Also it loses power badly going up hills in 5th gear. Never had that with the old igniter. I still have it intact and can swap it back in once I get back to my shop. Don't have time during the week though.

Any ideas?

It seems that .045 is too wide when the cylinder pressure climbs in 5th gear on the freeway up hill. I'm going back to .037 to see how it works.

Had to pull the msd out. Had it timed perfectly and gap back to .030 and it still wouldnt start cold. Too bad because when it was warned up and running it was very smooth and idled great but I can't be warning it up every morning and evening for my commute. It's working fine again stock coil and igniter.

I never ran spiral plug wires that the MSD wants but my wires are only a few weeks old. I might go back to the blaster coil and open the gap with the stick igniter but I was kind of tired of messing with it for the time being

That's a weird problem. I was hoping someone would chime in who maybe knew what was going on.

Now it's having trouble starting cold with the stock igniter. I had to retard it this morning to get to work. Then I had no power on the freeway and I commute 35 miles each way with hills. Ugh.

I upgraded to a pertronix setup and added a flamethrower coil, and suddenly it wouldn't start when cold either. Chased the problem around and finally re-installed the stock coil...problem solved. I would re-check the coil, it may be failing.

Well it was a combination of things most likely. After a while it wouldn't start on the stock igniter and coil. I would retard the timing to get it running. I think that only worked because the starter was not pulling as much current earlier in the stroke because it hadn't built compression. I wasn't near my shop but I had my timing light which has a digital display that shows voltage rpm and advances the timing. I finally decided to use the volt meter on that to measure the coil voltage and it was dropping to 9 while cranking.

So I put a relay in and wired the MSD 6 back in. I cranked it over and it still wouldn't start so I imagine that I screwed up the box by giving it crappy power. Oh well it was an old box I didn't pay much for. I put the stock igniter in and wired it thru the relay and to the msd blaster coil. Opened the plugs to .038 and it starts on the first crank now. That old wiring just couldn't give it what it needed.
