 Post subject: Front Diff?
PostPosted: Sat Nov 09, 2002 1:43 pm
:?: Got a question for those Luv that are 4x4...
I got a 1980 4x4.. I got an engine, trans, and transfer... the transfer exits on the driver instead of the passenger side.. and it will not flip that easy.. :?

My dad said if the front end can be flipped, it will work..
I was just wandering if any one has done this? or have any suggestions..
It looks like the brackets holding the axle can be removed and placed on the same side when the axle is flipped... Haven't got a chance to check this out.. been raining most of the weekend.. Truck is in the backyard, no garage yet :(

The engine is only a 2.8, so I dont think the front end will be the weak point of the setup...
Thanks....

From what I can see in my shop manual, I think it would physically bolt up ok. But there is a pressure vent on the top of the axle casing. It looks kinda like a grease fitting with a plastic cap on it. You might leak all of your diff fluid out through this vent if you turn the axle upside down. I don't know if it would be OK to seal this vent off.

Hey guys, Well that little fitting on the top is a vent for the diff so if any water, mud or any thing lighter than 90 weight will be expelled so as not to damage the gears, and as such would not be advisable to plug. Also just curious as to why you would want to flip it anyway?? :?:
Anyway hope this helps.

Dave

I already have a a transmission and a transfer from a 2.8.. and the transfer is on the opposite side of the pumpkin.. my dad thinks i can plug and dril, cap another hole on the top side once i get it in..

Trying to save a bit of money on replacing the front diff... I'm tryin to make what i got work, that the main reason for the flip...

I wouldnt see any reason why you cant just drill and tap another hole for a new vent and plug your old. Bryan

PostPosted: Sun Nov 10, 2002 9:12 pm
well, the drain hole is the least of my problems...
After the flip the front end would be running backwards... the drive shaft would be turning the same way as before but the the axle would spin the oppsite.. so now, i'm kinda stuck... :x
:?: Has anybody changed the front end on their 4x4? just wandering what would bolt up to the Luv and what is compatible.. might have to do both front and the rear end to make sure i get the same gearing..

Have you checked to see what direction your transfer case will be turning? You may luck out if it turns the other way like you need it to.

If you flip the axle over, the wheels will rotate in the opposite direction. This would mean your LUV would be coming and going at the same time. Sorry!!!

Im not sure if i understand, if you flip the diff how will this be turning in a opposite direction? If your front driveshaft is rotating clockwise, thus turning your differential clockwise, if you were to flip it, wouldnt it still be rotating clockwise? Bryan

Bryan, it might help if you imagine the tire rotation in your head for a car on it's roof.

if you have drum brakes then the brakes will self adjust which will mean that your brakes will be on all the time. 8O

You need to think about the position of the ring and pinion gears before and after you flip the axle over. In the original position the pinion gear is on one hand then when you flip it, it will be on the other hand, thus reversing the rotation.

I saw it on Junk Yard Wars one night. They were building drag cars and one team blew the tranny so the flipped the rear end and ran the trans in reverse. Worked great!

giles has it down, your direction of rotaition will be reversed and the breather will be upside down. Now something you may try is pulling the third member and flipping it so it is the same as it once was. then weld the old hole for the breather closed and drill a nnew one on the new top of the axle and do it that way. Im not shure if the third member will fli or not but its worth a shot, just do that before trying anything else.

lol read my custom title, this sort of thing is my sacred duty
but seriously, i would pull the front end and see if you flip the third member inside the axle housing so that it is sitting up right.

i saw that episode of junkyard wars too. who says you never learn anything from tv? i just rebuilt my front axle and you can't turn the third member around. the bolt holes line up but there is an indention in the housing for the ring gear, so when u turn it around the ring gear hits the housing. and it won't go in all the way. best thing i know to do is find another axle. since you have a 2.8 it probably came out of an s10. it might not be too hard to swap out the s10 axle since luvs were later s10s. and both have ifs front diffs. if that doesn't work i'd say find a solid front axle and put under it. thats better in the long run anyway. another option is to turn over the rear axle. they'd be goin the same way but you'd have forward reverse and reverse forward. i know on vw bugs you can turn around one gear in the tranny and it reverses the direction of the transmission. maybe its possible to do that on your transmission.
