okay guys so I finally got my truck running good, at least thats what i thought. I just did the tune up, and replace the alternator on wednesday. I drove it to work this morning and it ran like a champ. I commute 40 miles eat way to work. About an hour after im here at work i jump in my truck to move it and its dead. The truck has a brand new battery. So i hooked up the charger for about 45mins turn the key any start it up right away it seems like the alternator is not working right. what can it be the resistor? I took the cover off it and it smelled like a electrical fire had happen. Some help would be nice thanks now this is my ride home today so im in a runsh to fix it today.

If you have a meter check the voltage of the battery with the motor off. It should read 12v or less if your battery is low. Then start it up and check the voltage again. It should be at least 13v if not slightly higher. That shows you the alternator is working or not. I had a Rambler once and there was plastic washer on the alternator wire that was on the wrong side of the terminal and it would not charge the battery. I hope it helps.

Is your alternator belt tight enough? I had the belt slipping on my daughters Nova last year, the belt turned the alternator but not quite fast enough. Did you verify 13+ volts at the battery when it is running to see if the alt is working?
