i got a 1979 luv and it wouldnt start this morning. thought it might be the ignition lock cylinder so i bought one. still no luck. it will start but shut off as soon as i let go of the key. any help?

I'm assuming you swapped out the whole ignition switch? Also check the plug itself, as they sometimes melt.

I would also take a look at the ballast resistor.

I'm sure others with chime in as well.

Check the connections to your alternator. The fuel pump runs off one of the wires from the alternator when the key is in the on position.

When I had the exact symptoms it was the resister across the coil. When it burns out truck will start because starting bypasses that resister. It shuts downs as soon as current is supposed to go through the resistor again. Cheap fix.
