I need to know for sure which way the sight glass goes on the factory Hitachi carburetor. I have it installed toward the bottom of the carb. Is this right?

Round glass window with a bullseye in the center mounted in a rectangular metal piece, right? If the window is not centered but offset in the metal piece the window goes up, correct position for the float is such that the bowl is nearly full when the float valve closes & stops more incoming fuel.

excellent thank you for your reply. thats exactly what i needed to know. i was having trouble fuel starvation and noticed that it seemed like i may have put the sight glass upside down. mine is offset from the center so i need to flip it over. the part that confused me was that the fuel would land dead nuts with the bulls eye when the float is adjusted according to the rebuild kit instructions.

The attached images are from a series 10 FSM, both show the sight glass towards the top.
I suspect you will have to adjust the float level to center the bullseye with the sight window in the up position.

By the way, I was having problems with my stock 1.8L cutting out at high speed. Seemed like it was starving for gas. So I drove it about 800 miles and it didn't fix itself. Got back home and checked the float level and it was about 3/16" below the center dot. I pulled the cover off a few times but finally got the gas level exactly on the dot. Runs great now. Sooooooo....the float level is very important. Get it right.
