I need to replace my stock engine in a 78 LUV w/ Auto Trans. What engines from the 80's Isuzu models would be a direct bolt in replacement. ??

The auto trans limits you somewhat to just the G180 (LUV and Isuzus up to about 83) and the G200 1.9L found in Isuzus up to about 86. They are basically the same motor externally.

The larger Isuzu 4 cylinder engines (2.3L and 2.6L) can fit and would bolt to a stock LUV manual transmission, but I don't think they will work with the auto. Just finding a flex plate for one would be a challenge. The bolt pattern on the crankshaft is different so the one from a G180 LUV engine would not fit.

Why not a 2.6 with the 4-speed auto that comes with it? It was a good transmission, for an auto. Would it fit?

Yessir same engine externally other than they say g200 instead of having the isuzu logo on the head. I had an impulse turbo manifold and efi intake that bolted up to my stock 1.8 head. Isuzu interchangability is almost as good as chevys

That is a possibility, but how many 2WDs Isuzus actually had an Auto? I haven't seen many. I suppose there might be a few more 2WD Rodeos with an Auto and a 2.6L, or you could use the 4WD auto and a 2.6L from an 88-91 Trooper. There could be some space issues fitting any of these into the trans tunnel though. I have not seen where anyone has done a similar swap.
