I've searched and can't quite seem to find what I'm looking for. I'm looking for how to do a smog delete. I understand you have to take the pump off. But is there anything else I should do?

take the pump off and disconnect all the hoses related to it and plug them... take out the air injection rail above the exhaust manifold and plug the 4 holes they are 14mmx1.25 thread... really hard to find a plug i made my own.. also remove the copper pipe that runs from the exhaust mani around the back of the head to the underside of the intake... your going to need to make a plate to block off the port that is under the intake manifold or weld the hole shut/plug it... the last thing you want is hot exhaust gas in your intake when you want performance

and this is for an 80? Not quite sure if the earlier models have a different set-up as for having the intake and exhaust on different sides.

The info he gave you is for the later engine. Dive in and have fun.

yep same process i went thru for my 80, a lot of it is really obvious when you look at it that it isnt necessary to make the truck run.
plug up whatever is connected to the air pump and remove the extra junk.. just make sure you ploug any hole that is left very well and you will be good to go

if the intake and exhaust are on different sides of the engine its the same, in case someone swapped an engine in to a different year truck..

there are some hoses your going to want to keep, distributor vacuum advance needs to stay. the vent at the back of the engine on top of the valve cover needs to stay, there is an oil pan vent and a second valve cover vent between the carb and valve cover, you want to keep all 3 of these or you can build pressure in the crankcase and long story short It will start pushing your oil out of the dipstick tube under pressure...

Thanks! i am semi use to this stuff on Japanese sport bikes they call it a clean air mod. I have done everything mentioned accept the brass looking hose that goes around the motor i left cause i dont have anything to plug the holes.. Also the back of the valve cover breather i put a small air filter on.. Should i hook it back into the oem air cleaner or will it be fine like that? I couldnt find any 14mm 1.25 bolts in town for the air injection rail so i cut the old thread in bungs off the rail and forced bolts into the hollow center haha worked like a charm.. She fired up and ran good..

The metal tube you are talking about is the EGR. I would leave that connected. With these stock engines I have never noticed a performance gain removing the smog equipment.

I just wanted to get the pump and rail out of the way.. Looks much cleaner and i doubt my truck was to smog friendly anyways lol.. Just noticed the carb is leaking gas out of the bottom right side near the square part.. its sad i dont have much experience with carbs been messing with fuel injection for the most part.. ill have to study up possibly just buy a nice intake and carb

Stock carb is pretty universally known as the biggest pos on a stock luv. There is a bolt on weber carb kit and mokadeth sells a nice aftermarket intake manifold that has a lot of good reviews

The carb and intake will be a noticeable deference in power and reliability. The other thing to look at is a electronic ignition system. Do a search here, there is a company that sells a drop in unit for the stock distributor that works great. With those three items your truck will be much more reliable.

Here is a search on the pertronix
search.php?keywords=Pertronix&terms=all&author=&sc=1&sf=all&sk=t&sd=d&sr=posts&st=0&ch=300&t=0&submit=Search

Here is the info on the intakes, I don't have a 4 cylinder but those who have one and added this intake like them.

viewtopic.php?f=5&t=13214

Most go to redline carbs to get the weber kit. Do a search and a ton of info will appear for the carb kit.

After all that is done you can upgrade to a 5 speed trans or get a third member with different gears so you can keep up with freeway traffic and your engine won't sound like it wants to jump out of your truck.

Forgot to mention, a pacesetter header will help it breath too. With all of those mods I listed that is about the best you can do with bolt on mods. These are common mods for many members here.

I agree, leave the metal tube connected. As long as the EGR valve itself is disconnected--vacuum hose unhooked and plugged-- it will never activate so no problem. As to the filter on the rear of the valve cover--you can either use the filter you have or connect it back up to the air cleaner. This is an intake of filtered air for the engine crankcase so either will work fine.

The EGR should be hooked up and working. It actually helps the engine.

Thanks for clearing up the filter question!

+1 here. My stock truck was desmogged and it did nothing to help anything. It did well to get 15mpg.

The EGR was disabled for a time after I acquired an 83 PuP with a G200 (same basic motor as the LUV) and I could not get that truck timed any higher than about 4-6 degrees BTDC without it pinging and popping under any kind of load even with good premium gas. Once I hooked the EGR back up, I could run quiet and smooth at 12-14 degrees BTDC on cheap low octane and had more power.

The EGR valve keeps the combustion chamber temps cooler, which prevents the formation of NO2 during combustion, and has the side effect of making the motor less likely to ping or detonate even on lower grade fuel.
