Poked around and inspected/tinkered with a few things including the fuse box. After doing this I hooked up the battery and attempted to start the truck. Fired right up. Shut it off, checked carb etc. Started it, fired right up. (Had to pump the throttle a few times first each time.) Did this a couple more times, revved good, idled fine.

Drove the truck down the street and back. No problems. Let it sit for a little bit then hopped in and started it, started right up. Drove it around and then suddenly the truck starts losing power as if it were out of gas and stalls. Attempted to start it and it wouldn't start or it would almost start then die. Hoping it was finally out of gas I added 1 gallon of fresh gas to the tank and the truck started right up but wouldn't idle, and kept stalling. If I kept some pressure on the throttle it would stay running but if I gave it too much throttle it sounded as if it were starving for fuel and wouldn't rev very high. Every time I tried to get moving the truck didn't have what it took to get past me slowly letting the clutch out.

Needless to say I had to get a friend to help me pull it back home.

This time it seems to be a fuel issue... Maybe the carb needs to be rebuilt? Or cleaned/adjusted? It is running old gas, there is probably some gunk in there.

If you were running it low of fuel to get rid of the old gas, I would suspect it picked up some trash and fouled the needle and seat. I am working on a 1966 gto and this is what happened, as the fuel filter on the pickup had deteriorated...

Sounds likely. I had an intermittent problem with my 79 when I first got it running that turned out the be the carcass of a yellow jacket that had died in the tank. It would run good, then stall and barely get enough fuel to idle. Blow back into the tank and it would run good for a while longer. The dead bee was getting sucked up the tube and stopping when it hit the fuel filter, plugging it like a cork. I finally realized what was going on when its hind end stuck in the filter inlet enough to see when I took the hose off. Pulled the take and cleaned it out, no more problems.

If its sat for a while even crud in the lines after the filter and pump can foul the carb. There is a screen at the carb where the fuel lines attachs that catches a lot of stuff, but not everything. Take the inlet tube off and you should see the screen.

I'll look into that. Probably pull out the in line filter and let the fuel pump run for a bit to get all the nastiness out of the tank maybe? I already went through one fuel filter already after driving the truck the first time when I was still at the shop, the filter had plugged so I had to get another one. Could be plugged again maybe, though I had a thick constant flow of fuel coming out of the fuel line when I was on the side of the road yesterday.

Also probably going to pull off the carburetor and hose it down with carb cleaner.

Just in case I have all the parts I need to rebuild/renew my carb in my shopping cart at RockAuto.

Running a aftermarket one from Electric Performance. (P/N: P-12K) The stock one did nothing when powered up, so I bought this one from the universal section at RockAuto. Pushes 5-9 PSI with a external in line filter that already plugged up and was removed/replaced the first week lol

I'll probably have to just bite the bullet and drop the gas tank and clean it properly.

One end of the stock pump is supposed to have a screen/filter in it but they are VERY hard to find replacements for, and I also don't trust that the pump would seal up again reliably if you changed them often. I think I did find the filters could be bought from JC Whitney though, but that was years ago. I did get a few more miles out of one of my stock style fuel pumps by pulling the rust clogged filter out of it, but it didn't last long. It had the inline before the pump so it shouldn't get too much crud in it to begin with.

I might have spoke too soon. The stock pump is a Facet model. From what I found online it the replacement part for the filter and gasket is 610-1086 at Napa.

I'm having very similar problems as you, after reading thru this post, I believe Im going to take my fuse panel apart and clean the crap out of it. I can idle ANYWHERE in any gear or neutral but give it some gas and it cuts out and eventually backfires like crazy. Just rebuilt the carb, ran awesome for a day and its back to this same BS. Have you come any closer to a solution?? Also, my fasten seat belt and gen light always work fine, but every time I hit the throttle my radio resets... Dumb. Fix your truck and share the info.. You'll be my hero forever.

That sounds like points to me. I'm not sure why the radio resets, but my 76 that used to eat points like crazy behaved just like that. It would idle ok, but any amount of throttle and it would cough and sputter. It backfired once so badly it split a fairly new muffler right down the side.
