I am working with my brother in law who has a 74 chevy luv. I am under the impression that it is a G200Z engine. It is overhead cam with both intake and exhaust on the drivers side. We need pistons for it, but it is already .040 over. The engine sat with water in the cylinders and must be cleaned up. Datsun L20B pistons are close in specs, nothing that is a dealbreaker, and are still available. They are 85mm which is .040 over and are available in .020, .030, and .040 over.

What I want to know is, does anyone know what the maximum overbore of a g200z engines is. I would think they come out of an era of thick cylinder walls. I want to take it out .060 or .070 to clean up the walls. Anybody have any experience here?? Thanks for your time, dan...

By the way, the .040 pistons are still usable if I can find pistons for this project. I would also take a boreable block in the southern california area. dan...

A G200Z engine was a 1.9L version of the earlier G180Z (which were in LUVs from '76-'82) and was first offered in the Isuzu line in 1984. Both the G200Z/G180Z had intakes on the passenger (right) side, exhaust on the driver (left) side. A stock '74 engine is a different animal, I think it may have been a G180 but with a different letter suffix, someone more familiar with the pre '76 engines will have to chime in.
I have never heard of an Isuzu engine being bored over .040, I suspect you will need a new block.

I have a G200 and it says G200 on it and intake is on opposite side of exhaust. Dunno what year mine is.

The 74 is a g180 engine but a early model. If the intake and exhaust is on the same side then parts will not interchange with the later g180 or g200 engine. The engine you describe is a 72-75 only engine. You will need to find pistons for that range.

I wonder if the Datsun pistons have the same size wrist pins and location.

Well, thanks to those who responded. New info... It seems that regardless of whether I can overbore safely, I cannot do this because the head gasket would end up in the bore. At .040 over, the head gasket is right on the edge of the cylinder bore. Going any bigger would put the fire ring in the bore. Not by much but not acceptable. I will be looking for another block that will go .040. dan...

BTW, the L20B pistons do have a smaller pin diameter by about .060, but bushing the rod would have solved that. Also, the compression height is about .060 higher but they are dished and removing a bit would only put the top ring a bit higher, but within reason. I would use them if I could not find .040 pistons but that is not my situation here.

a good machine shop can over bore and sleeve back to stock, if keeping the OE block is something you really want...

plan on it costing though, around $150/200 a hole.... at that point a used long block for under $600 becomes cost effective..that is if you can find one...
