I called the smog ref and he said Redline Weber made this K8662 carburetor kit in the 80s. The Hitachi carb it has now totally blows and I would like to use my 79 LUV 4x4 as a daily driver. I have had the Hitachi rebuilt and worked on two times since, I really want to ditch it. The choke is erratic and it is wasting a lot of fuel. Super weak, I can't get past 60 mph (can't get on the freeway) and it accelerates like a slug. A new one was like $450 last time I checked at Oreilly, the Weber carbs I see online are $250.

I just want to make sure I can get a Weber that is smog legal and according to the smog ref the K8662 is the only one that is. Does anyone know where I can get one?

Or has anyone been able to get the K662 they have on the Redline Weber site http://www.redlineweber.com/carb-kits/auto/chevrolet/ to pass smog somehow?

I talked to a guy at redline weber today and a guy at weber direct and they both say they kit I am looking for has been discontinued. I called a bunch of random carb shops on google that have it listed in their catalogs but they all say they don't have it, one place said they sold their last one in 2002.

I was reading the document the smog ref told me about and it says the carb I am looking for was based on a weber for ford fiestas. Anyone know if that would work with the smog?

Here is a link for the pdf of the document the smog ref told me about for this carb I am looking for, it includes technical data and drawing. http://arb.ca.gov/msprog/aftermkt/devices/eo/D-133-13.pdf

Have you contacted Weber directly? They should be able to tell you which carb it was based on so you can find one.

I did but the guy wasn't very helpful, all he wanted to tell me was that I couldn't get the one for the Isuzu. Most of the carb guys I have talked to about this recently and pretty much anyone at the shops out here I asked about the LUV have not been very helpful at all actually lol. I did read up a little and had a lot of help from Mokadeath. The K8662 was based on a 32/34 DFT for a Ford Fiesta, which might be even harder to find. I found another emissions legal weber carb (maybe the only one weber still makes?) but it's for a Toyota pickup. It's basically the same 32/36 design, I think with the right adapters (off the k662 for the intake and if the toyota air cleaner adapter doesn't work someone said the datsun one does fit) it might work. The only thing that becomes tricky then is the visual inspection. It comes with a label or sticker saying it's smog legal but I haven't seen one of these and I suspect it might have the exact vehicle year make and model, if so I can't use the sticker, but at least that says it will pass the smog test.

I got my Weber (not for smog, I grant you) from BFIC Carbs Only

http://www.carbsonly.com/

You might contact them, I think they have every Weber that's available, or will be able to tell you how and where to get it. They are in Burbank, CA.

Do not keep the Hitachi if you can afford it. I like tuning things and even I got rid of my Hitachi, they really are junk.

Cool. I will give them a call tomorrow, it's  frustrating getting stuck behind a big rig doing 40 and not having the power to pass it up unless you got like half a mile clear lol

Damn, I called that place already lol. They are the ones who said they sold the last one 10 years ago.

I'm going to try this one: http://www.aptuned.com/weber-K8747-toyota I don't see any reason why it shouldn't work?

I just got my K8747 and I tried fitting my stock air cleaner to the air cleaner adapter provided (for toyota) and it doesn't fit.

I was messaging Mokadeath and he directed me to this old thread:

http://forums.luvtruck.com/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=23741&p=173763&hilit=weber+smog+legal#p173763

So I searched for that part number and found the Datsun air cleaner adapter http://www.carburetion.net/products/3452-99010301.aspx which I need to purchase now.

Is this the throttle adapter I have seen a lot of people on here say you also need?

Hey Elruffian, I got your message, but the smog document excludes the 1980. :x
Thought for the 76-79 Luvs, I am also stomped on the visual inspection.
There was a senator early this year that tired to Bill SB 1224, that would exempt vehicles 76 through 80 from smog. It failed by 1 vote. I believe they are going to try and pass the bill again, but no date has been set yet.

That blows, but I think if you talk to the smog ref. in your area and explain your situation (there are parts that will make the LUV run better and cleaner than what it came with which are available and the stock ones that make it run crappy (mainly the carb) are costlier and harder to find) he might get you one of those exempt stickers so that they don't make a big deal that it's not stock anymore or the visual inspection and just focus on the readings.

I think that's what I might have to end up doing, I talked to the smog ref. here and he seemed like a pretty reasonable guy.

Next time I need to do a smog check I'm going to try a different shop since the guys who did it last time had no clue what they were looking at, maybe I'll get lucky again.

If they do get caught up on something visual then I'll have to make an appointment with the smog ref so he can hopefully issue me one of those exempt stickers.

I heard about that bill too, hopefully they will vote again soon and pull their heads out of their asses this time around.

I did talk to my local smog shop (i'm in El Dorado county, so I heard countys can vary a little), but he told me I could get different carb as as long as it had a certain lettter on the model (I don't remember what it was, because I was broke at time, and coudlnt get another carb). So you could at least get an improvment from the stock Hitachai Carb.

As far as the Weber carb kits go, anything with the K8xxx format model number is smog legal for California. The K means kit I guess? and then 4 digits where the first one is an 8.

The K8747 was the only one I could find for sale anymore new.

Would the k8747 bolt directly to the Offy intake that Mokadeth sells, or would you need an adapter?

Sorry for the late reply Zane, I have been busy with my El Camino. I finally got this bolted on and it does not require an adapter to fit on the offy intake, but I did have to buy an adapter so the stock air cleaner would fit (weber sells this adapter for datsun and it fit on the luv).

I need some help with the vacuum lines now though. The truck makes a sputtering/farting noise (almost makes it sound like an old vw bug) and I suspect one of the lines is sucking oil mist into the carb? I just rebuilt the engine and haven't put 100 miles on it yet and it was a quart low (no leaks). Does anyone have experience with this carb and Isuzu engines? I checked out a few emissions diagrams for the 79 toyota pickup and it looks a lot more (way more lines) involved...

I also have a dead pertronix unit I have to deal with returning...
