Hi guys....I have what I think is a 78 LUV transmission. It has the starter on the left side. I bought it on line from a salvage yard in Albany Oregon. They claimed it was a '77. Any way, If this is a '78 trans, would it fit an '81 stock LUV? Thanks...Don

Isuzu gas engine starters are on the right side(facing the front of the vehicle), diesels are on the left except for the 1.8L diesel found in Chevettes.
If the spare tranny you have has the starter on the left side it won't fit a stock gas engine '81 LUV, but might fit if you have a diesel, you don't specify which engine you have.

If that is from a 77 it should have the starter on the right and the clutch fork coming out on the right as well. This is both as viewed with the front of the trans facing away from you, just like it would be installed in the truck.

If the starter is on the left and the clutch fork on the right it likely came from a 75 or older truck. Anything 77 or older will have a clutch fork with a pocket on the end for a push rod from a slave cylinder to fit into.

For an 81 you'd want a 78-82. The starter will be on the right and the clutch fork is on the left. The clutch fork will have a hook on the end for a cable.

Even though those should fit, I'd strongly recommend an '86-'95 (from a 2.3)...much more durable.

True, I just can't speak to the "bolt in" replacement factor on those, 78-82 LUV trans should be bolt for bolt a match including driveline and yoke.

Okay, then through '85 would be the same, including the yoke. After '85, still true EXCEPT for the yoke (assuming it's from the 2.3 engine, not the 2.6).
