hi!

i am sorry to introduce my self like this, but i kinda need some help.

i bought a $600 luv 4x4, so i could get back and forth to work this winter, but it has been a big stink as far as panning out.

i was told it was a rod bearing going out, that is why i purchased it. i traveled over 500 miles round trip, a motel room, and a tow dolly, to begin with, and when i got the truck home, that is when things went super sour.

i have been able to determine that the bearing is not the problem, it is more detailed than that.

i got the truck to run for about 10-15 seconds, and could tell that it was not a rod bearing as the previous owner stated. there was no knock at all.

but then i could not get it to start again.

i adjusted the valves, dist timing, plugs, added new wires, carb choke, , but nothing but a few backfires through carb and exhaust.

i did a compression check, and prior to any adjustments, no 1 was almost 180, 2,3,4, were all about 92. this sounds like a buggared motor to me.

can i get a second opinion on this please?
thank you,
shnippy

First guess----cam timing problem. Timing chain slipped or broken.

da LUV masta sounds right. Tell us more about how it ran for the first few seconds. How many miles? The compression is odd but if the valves were not in proper sequence with the crank then that could make for a bad test result. All may not be lost......

hi guys,

thanks for getting back to me, and sorry for taking so long to repost.

so i got the truck running.
put new dizzy from 85 pup, weber 32/36 carbie, new battery, plugs, wires, etc...

its running pretty good. starts easily. idles ok now.

it does seem to lack some power and wants to ping a bit when pulling a small incline.

it has 31x9.5" on it and i know that doesnt help.

i did a compression check, and i find this odd, but here are the results.

#1 160psi
#2 95psi
#3 95psi
#4 95psi

i popped a little oil in #3 and it raised it to about 115psi. stopped the test there.

re-checked plug gaps .040, popped them back in fired her up, sounds good.

it is too late tonight, but tomorrow i will try it out and see if it still pings.

i also did a vacuum test, and it was in the green zone, but the needle on the gauge fluctuated at idle, not bad, but did fluctuate, and when the engine was revved to about 2-2500 rpm's the needle smoothed out.

vacuum leak?

any ideas to get her running well enough to trust in the snow (coming very soon), i would be grateful to hear.

i have no back e-brake either. that cable was rusted solid, and i had to cut it to get it to release. i have been looking for a replacement (the one that goes into the brake drums), and i dont see a direct fit replacement, but it looks like one for an early i-mark is a very close match.

not too worried about that right now, i just need to get it running well enough, so that i can trust it not to leave me stranded.

thanks guys, and happy holidays.

oh sorry, forgot to mention that someone has swapped the motor out for a g200z.

i didnt figure this out until i was looking down the timing chain guide, and noticed it didnt match the 1.8l pics . started looking around the motor and a big ol' g200 on the side lol. glad i didnt start buying internal parts, like i almost did.

i havent nailed down the year of the engine, but i guess 83-85 range.

the head from the top looks very clean, the timing with the crank pulley on tdc, the cam lines up (mark on shaft , to mark on head).

the chain seems to be in good condition.

maybe tomorrow i can take some pics, and post them.

thanks for the help!
