I just replaced the engine in my '79 4x4. It ran great for about 10 min then I smelled antifreeze and is was blowing blue smoke but it did not over heat. I have a couple of questions.

1. Do you think I just have a bad gasket?

2. Does anyone know a good place to buy a set?

Looking online it looks like about $60 but I did not want to over look a cheaper set somewhere else.

Thanks

Is this a used motor? If so, did you do a compression test? Blue smoke is usually burning oil. Rebuilt or used, I would do a compression test or a cylinder leak down test to see what it is.

I agree with rondog on the blue smoke. Thats usually a sign of it burning oil. White smoke would be a better indicator of a blown head gasket. This sounds like a used motor. If you are hoping to just change the head gasket, I would give everything else a danged good looking over to see what other problems you may have inherited with your "new" motor.

Sorry got busy and haven't had a chance to drop in here.

Jeff thanks for the rockauto.com. Ordered a set, when the box got to me I opened it and the white box inside was empty. No gaskets. No packing list.
Called them and they were very nice, great customer service sent a new set out that same day.

It was the head. It was a used motor that I was told was running. Its running now. Used the head off my old motor. 2 bad motors turned into 1 good one. Just got done this morning and
took it for a little ride. Sounds good and running like it should. I put a Weber on it while I was at it. The body is ugly but my hunting truck is running.

I found that looks almost like it just came off the show room floor 30 miles from me. I am going to try to catch the guy and see if I can talk him out of it. IF the wife will let me...

Thanks guys.
