Hi guys....been away working. My '77 stock LUV is burning about a quart of oil per tank of gas. Sounds like worn out problems but the engine only has 25,000 miles on a complete re-build...[2009]. I took it down completely and bored it +.020 and turned the crank .020....new pistons rings etc. Others have suggested a bad PCV valve but I cannot find it. I don't think there is one on that engine. I haven't ran the compression yet so I'm neglegent there. I did put a rebuilt head on it a month ago because the old one had a crack in the oil galley. So....I'm thinking it is probably not the valve guides. I recently re-torqued the head too. It seems to smoke when I'm accelerating only. There is no smoke when I start up after the engine sits for a while. It sounds real quiet and runs really nice---it just uses oil. No leaks on the ground. With only 25,000 miles, it seems odd that I would be having this kind of trouble. Any suggestions? Thanks everyone....Don

The PVC system is the one place I can think of where oil could get into the intake. You have no PVC valve per say, just a metered orfice (hole) into the base of the carb to handle this. It is the small, short hose from the carb base to the valve cover.
I would pull the valve cover and inspect the inside where the hose attaches inside. Make sure the baffle is in place that prevents oil from splashing directly against the hose intake.
The other thing I would do is pull the spark plugs and see if any one of them is carboned up more or shows oil burning.

Well,....I just ran a compression test. #1--145lbs, #2--140lbs, #3--152 lbs, #4--160lbs. Then I squirted some 30 weight oil in #2 cylinder and ran the compression again. After several tests where the excess oil ran up the pressure to 240 or so, the new oiled reading on #2 settled down to 160lbs for the 7th, 8th, 9th, and 10th test. But, agreed the 140lbs is not the best, it is way better than many engines running today. I'm hoping the rings are not the problem for obvious reasons. I pulled the hose [maybe 3/4" diameter] from the valve cover to the air cleaner and found the nipple coming out of the valve cover was pulling a vacumn. I didn't test it but could put my finger over it and feel the suction. When I did that the engine RPM revved up some and it seemed to run smoother. I did that test a couple of times with equal results. A buddy mentioned the EGR valve. Guess I'll check that next. It still idles and runs well though. You guys got anything else?? Thanks to all....Don
