Hello, I have started working on my 79 Luv 4x4. I took out the rubber mat and the floor insulation (which was pretty much destroyed). The floor pan had some rust but not real bad. I cleaned up all the loose rust and painted it with some rustoleum.

Below is what I would really appreciate some help from you experienced Luv fans:

1. The stock rubber mat is actually in pretty good shape. However, the floor insulation was destroyed and is now in the trash can. Should I just re-install the rubber mat without insulation? If not, what should I replace the insulation with and do I need to glue it down?

2. I want to buy some rubber floor mats to protect the stock rubber mat? Would like to have some that are a custom fit and will stay in place. What have you guys had the best luck with? Are there any that will stay in place sitting on top of the rubber mat?

Thanks for the help.

Obviously you are not fighting rust like I am. The rubber mat will hold moisture under it leading to more rust. I threw all my original stuff away and bought an indoor/outdoor carpet remnant, and with some cutting and overlapping, made a nice job of it.

Labman, thanks for the reply. My rust wasn't severe. I understand what you mean about the rubber mat holding moisture. However, I would like to avoid using carpet if possible.

If you have the money I would recommend something like Dynamat or something similar. This little trucks have a lot of road noise. Also you could try spray on undercoating. But you can buy carpet padding at any place that sells carpeting.

I had a similar problem with my 80 4x4 and I ended up taking a wire wheel to the floor and grinding all of the rust out. Then I bought some high quality bedliner and coated the floor. Afterwards I laid down some insulation and glued it to the floor and put the rubber mat over it. You should be fine if you spray it with a durable protectant.

I hope that helps you out!
