Shirley is my 80 4x4 who has a couple of quirks that I haven't addressed. The fuel pump gets quite loud(ticking), which I'm assuming means it's not getting fuel(truck will start it dies after a stutter). This would only happen if I tried starting her right after I shut her off(after running for several minutes). After 10-20 minutes the fuel pump quiets down and it won't have any problems until I turn it off again. My thoughts are there are particles in the tank that block the line . also doesn't like to turn over after warmed up. I know my battery is pretty shot and am getting a new one.

Today I'm driving around running errands and she sputtered and died. won't turn over fuel pump is totally silent. I have lights but they get real dim when I try to turn her over.

any thoughts or links to expodite my searching are appreciated

sounds a lot like what mine was doing recently..
i went thru 4 fuel pumps in less than a year with similar symptoms.. when it dies if you let it sit for about ten minutes will it start for a few seconds and then die again? or start run for about 500ft and die again?

pull your fuel filter and see if it is picking up a lot of gunk from in the tank. i thought that was my problem originally so i pulled my bed off and looked into the tank and it was spotless. :egeek if it is all good inside you are having an electrical problem like a lot of us.

next thing i would check is the voltage regulator if you find that the pump isnt sucking a bunch of gunk
do you have a voltage tester? try checking to see what kind of power your alternator is feeding to your battery...
i ended up wiring my fuel pump up straight to the "on" post on my ignition.. i need to install a fuze or relay in line with it but it does make checking to see if its working easier... when i get in the truck i can just turn the key to on without starting and listen to the fuel pump run for a few seconds before i turn it over.. which also helps make sure the float bowl is full enough before starting.
these trucks have a load of electrical isses... i would check.. voltage regulator -> alternator -> battery voltage -> and make sure you dont have any wires along the way being grounded where they shouldnt... if that doesnt solve it hardwire it like i did

Clean your battery connections too.A bad ground can cause problems.

2nd poster you went through a lot of work to check the tank there's 3 bolts on the front tab and 3 bolts on the back tab and 3-5 fuel lines to drop the tank... took me less then an hour to drop the tank clean it out and reinstall it (i should have coated it while it was out but.... at least its clean...

original poster

save your self some time and get a multi meter (mechanical or digital) even a $5 one from harbor freight will work (i have 3 of them from harbor freight and although not the most precise instruments they give you an idea on grounding and voltage)... this will be your best friend when working on a luv beings that 9/10 problems are electrical

as to the op check your ground wires at your battery and the ground for your fuel pump my original pump was having that same issue while it was hard wired to the ignition (i ended up replacing the pump thinking it was bad) but the ground wire for the battery was corroded to hell and not making a good enough connection...

The electric pump is wired through the alternator.

At crank it should have power.
Then it will only work when there is charge while the motor is running.
So bad connections will affect it.
The pump is wired through a resistor wire and should only see about 9v.

This is a saftey feature, if the engine stops so does the pump.

In the event of an accident or brain fade if its hard wired to ignition ON, then it can pump fuel when the engine is stopped. Just a bit dangerous.
