Hello everyone. I'm new here and I have a couple questions. I have a very fun to drive 1980 Luv 1.8 4-speed with only about 45k miles on the engine. Its completely stock and straight and the truck runs and starts perfect except that until the engine is "fully" warmed up, it will backfire a pop through the exhaust upon shifting gears. Its not loud because of the muffler but backfires will eventually cause the muffler to go bad. The only way to keep it from doing this is to be so mild on the throttle that not only am I keeping the RPM's as low as possible but that I also try to be easy on quick throttle closure too. When the engine is completely warmed up then its rare that it backfires. I was leaning towards possibly adjusting the valves but not only do I not know the cold clearances but I dont care to bother if someone can tell me that doing so wont help. Thanks guys and look forward to hearing what anyone replies with.

Aren't backfires usually timing related? I think if you bump your timing up a couple of degrees, that usually makes it go away.

I thought you had to bump it back.
Whichever way works, tweak you dizzy a bit until it helps. BUT NOT before you check your point gap, if that's way off correcting the gap may fix everything.

My truck did the same thing when i purchased it from a friend. I just did a tune-up on it (points, plugs, rotor, wires, etc) and its all good now. Im not for sure but i would think the point gap has something to do with it......Check your point gap. it shoud be at .018 then check your timing. As far as the valves go I would check them anyways as preventative maintenance.....its not a bad idea to have everything dialed in. If you want I could provide you with those clearances if you would like. good luck

Thanks guys for the information. That does make sense that it could be the points so I'll try that first before I do anything with the valve lash.

i found that the back firing in my 76 luv (timing was correct and advance is opening correctly) was caused by inconsistency in the carb float... if the level in the carb got to high it would flood the engine and the unburned gas would detonate as it hit the manifold (reaching optimal air/fuel ratio)
