I'm installing a new brake mc today and have had no problems up until I tried to attach the line at the front of the mc, the threaded inlet where the brake line attaches is larger than the one it replaced so I can't attach the line. Does anyone know why this is and what I can do to make it work safely? Is it wise to use an adapter (if one is even available) to step up the size and attach the line or am I going to have to get a new line with the proper sized adapter fabricated?

Nothing unsafe about an adapter. Just make sure that the difference isn't a clue that they gave you the wrong part.

Were there any years that had a larger opening on the front part of the MC? It looks just like the one it replaced on my '78 except for the larger opening.
