Curious to know why some people are running timing at 12 rather than 6...I've seen, while forum lurking, more than one has their timing set to 12. Why, what's the benefit if any? My truck is set at 12 but see the manual states it should be 6. I have a 79

Advanceing the timing gives you better performance..., But be careful, too far of an advance can lead to overheating and pinging/detonation.

I would set it where the factory recomends. Advancing to 12 degrees may make it feel quicker and more responsive at lower rpms but usually power will sag down the track at the higher rpms. Yes and you can do real damage with pinging/detonation. You probably would not hear it above the noise at high rpms until the damage is done.
