Hi everyone, 1979 Mikado 2wd.

Many people who owned this truck before me and including myself have screwed up something with my wiring.

Gauges no longer work. I had to rewire fuel pump direct to coil. I had a small gauge black and yellow on the coil and thought I fixed the alternator not charging problem until I drove to the store and the truck wouldn't turn off (funny). I pull the wire off and killed the truck. Then I tried pulling the regulator fuse which also kills the truck. Problem is, with the black/yellow off the coil it doesn't charge. I does light up the GEN light in the dash though.

Is it possible I have a bad relay for the alt/fuel pump? I have bought and returned so many parts for this truck from the auto parts store and it turned out to be my wiring not alternator, not regulator, etc. Anyway to test? My black and yellow on the fuse block has no power with the ignition on unless I put that little black and yellow on the coil, but then it won't turn off.

Thanks,

Mike

Older LUV's have a weak link in the electrical system, the fusebox. The terminals the wires connect are riveted to the fuse holders. A little age and corrosion, and you get electrical intermittents. I solved mine by taking it apart and soldering the joints. Others have cleaned it with lemon juice, and others a new fuse box. Yours may be new enough that they fixed the problem. You need to make sure power into the fuse box makes it back out. Power should flow from the battery to the key, to the fuse box, to the coil and VR.

On the 6 wire plug from the VR white red = W = fuel pump and charge light, white = W = ignition, white blue = B = battery, black = E = earth, British for ground, white black = F = field, the stem of the Tee connector to the alternator, and white green = N = field ground, feeds back to the VR.

This may help, http://www.luvtruck.com/PDF/Series6.pdf
