I have been trying to find the vin tag under the cowl. Can anyone tell me where this is exactly? I'm trying to make my '79 into a '74 to avoid all the crazy CA smog rules. Thanks for helping me keep a Luv out of the junk yard!!!!

You have to remove the cowl grill that is under the wipers. Once it's off, you will see it imprinted into the steel on the left side.

You may need to swap cabs in order to do it. You best bet would be to use the cab and frame and doors from the 74 due to the vin numbers and swap everything else from the 79 to it. A lot of work but it has been done.

Its a stamp. On my early LUV's I found it on the oppisite side from the later years, I cant remember what side each was on.

Problem is the frame still has a stamp, it could get ugly if the CHP ever look around.

When and why would the CHP look around? If I try to register it, will DMV look over the truck? Anytime I have transfered a vehicle, they just take my money and give me tags, as long as I have the documents. Then again, it's been 10 years since I've had to do that myself. Any info would be greatly appreciated.

I am thinking about doing the same thing with my 80 Luv, and buying a 75 cab and putting in on my frame.

Does anyone know if the there's a VIN on the frame? I already know about the door jam, doors, and under the cowl.

I've heard there is a vin on the cross member. I can't find mine, but then again, mine is covered in road grime, dirt, ect.
