Hello,

My original alternator died, it's a Hitachi. I have a GM 4.3/350 alternator I'm going to try to use. I can no longer tell with a volt meter what the wires on the back of the old alternator do because it's broken.

Anybody know?

Thanks,

Mike

The big black one is easy, power to the battery. One wire on the little ''T'' connector supplies the field current to the alternator. The other signals the regulator that the generator is charging. Not sure how the field works on alternators with build in regulators. They should have a charge signal terminal. Identify it and connect it to the white/red wire from the regulator that connects to the charge light and the fuel pump relay.

I forgot I had this where I keep useful information somebody may need;

On the 6 wire plug from the VR white red = W = fuel pump and charge light, white = W = ignition, white blue = B = battery, black = E = earth, British for ground, white black = F = field, the stem of the Tee connector to the alternator, and white green = N = field ground, feeds back to the VR.
