Last year my 1980 luv 1.8l was running great after i had rebuilt the stock distributor and added an msd ignition box. I went out to start it one day to go to work and it had no spark. And it hasnt since. I thought it may have been the msd box that i had bought used, so i bought another one and still no spark. I just put in an electronic distributor from an isuzu pup and still no spark. I know my msd box is hooked up correctly because it is the same hook up as the one i swapped out and it ran with that one in. I have tried 3 different coils and still nothing. No blown fuses. Im lost!!!!

I think sometime after my 77 they fixed the fuse box problem. Older LUV's have a weak link in the electrical system, the fusebox. The terminals the wires connect are riveted to the fuse holders. A little age and corrosion, and you get electrical intermittents. I solved mine by taking it apart and soldering the joints. Others have cleaned it with lemon juice, and others a new fuse box.

You can have power to the fuse box, a good fuse and nothing to the coil.

I'll give that a shot. I have power going into my msd box from the battery but no power at the coil.

It can't hurt to check your wiring from the distributor. Make sure nothing is grounded out somewhere. Like Labman said, make sure you check EVERYTHING with your fuse box.

this some times works. the coil holder acts like a coil ground also and if it is not clean and tight it can cause it to do that... i have only seen it happen twice but it is worth a shot and fixed the 2 that had the problems... same with the fuses but sounds like you took care of that....

Ive cleaned every ground that i have found and still nothing. I dont think there is a way that i have run into 2 bad msd boxes. There is power at the fuse box when the key is on. I turn the key on and there is no power to the coil. Could it be a bad ignition switch?

Check to make sure you have power at the coil.Sometimes you can break a wire and not get connection.Use the sharp point of your test light to check to see if the wire is broke.Check your fusible link at the battery..it can cause problems too! Also make sure all crimp connectors are making contact too. Also did you test your fuses? Sometimes there are hairline cracks that you can't see. With the tube fuses I have seen them fry at inside the metal connector where you can not see unless you test them.

I ran a wire straight from my battery to the + of the coil to power the coil and that didnt give me any spark either. I believe it has to be something simple that i must be over looking

Pull the distributor cap and turn the engine over and see if the rotor turns. Ground the - terminal and make and break the battery to the + and see if yu get a spark from the coil wire.

rotor turns in the distributor. With the key on I have no power to the coil from the msd box. There is power coming out of another wire from the msd box but not the one going to the coil.

Keep touching the + terminal with a wire from the battery and taking it away.

I am having a simular problem on my 80 with the 1.8. Mine starts then after 10 seconds it dies like you shut off the key. I have replaced the coil the v reg and the alt because the light was on when it first acted up. The radio and wipers are intermittent. After I start it once, it wont fire again for a couple minutes. I'm lost, What was the outcome of your problem.

alright so a buddy of mine came over and we messed with it for awhile and he put the old points distributor in it and put power directly to the distributor and it fired right up. He bypassed all the electrical stuff and believes that the electronic distributor that i had bought from a guy off here is bad. He thinks it has a bad coil pickup in it. The old distributor had no spark because the points were closing all the way. I never thought of checking the points in it again after i put the electonic one in but the points were messed up and were only a few months old

Check your ballast resistor, the doo dad on the side of the coil. Should have some resistance but conduct.
