Just bought this truck, was hoping to see if it will smog.. last owner said it needs a "Diverter Valve" (i guess he means a Bypass valve?)..Is that the same thing? Does anyone have any idea where I can get a bypass valve? Or any-other hard to find CA emissions stuff? Also need a '5 prong fuel pump bypass switch' (i think). Thanks!!

Welcome to my world. The diverter valve is a vacuum accuated air valve that allows air from the air pump to be directed into the intake below the carb under excessive vacuum conditions, like coasting down hill. Mine was stuck open, so I plugged it up to prevent too much air into the engine. This component has nothing to do with California emissions test. Its Isuzu's idea of a anti backfire component. I had to replace my air pump in order for my truck to pass the emissions test. This is most likely your problem, or a poorly adjusted carburator. I am currently running without a EGR pipe too. My mechanic told me that the only test for the EGR system is a properly funtioning EGR valve. He said the test does not specifically test the functionality of the EGR system, so bypassing the EGR is acceptable as long as the EGR valve is actually on the engine, and vacuum actually operates the valve.
There are very few emissions components you can buy new for these trucks. I even looked at emissions components for Isuzu vehicles, and the only components that you can still buy new are the air pump, air pump injector check valve and EGR valve. You cannot buy the diverter valve or the air pump check valve that is below the air pump, the EGR pipe or any of the air pump hoses. I was able to make the air pump hoses using 1/2" copper fittings, and a lot of hose clamps.
Good luck.

Thanks for the info! I bought this truck from a guy who had it on his ranch for 20 years, he had all emissions stuff disconnected :( It ran nice on the test drive of-course, but on the way home died on me. I put some fuel in the carb to get it restarted enough go get home (1 block)..now it will only start and run with throttle open, soon as i let off gas it dies quick.. I haven't even tried to smog test it yet, because i cant get it to idle (and i needed to put on the hoses and such. I went ahead and connected all the hoses, some are duck-taped because, like you said, i cant find any air hoses. I put on a air pump BELT, but pump makes noise, and still does same as above. I check fuel pump relay, it seems ok, i put on new pump, filter and hoses but still wont idle... Anyone got any ideas, or had similar problems?? Thanks, Peace.

if you are getting fuel to the carb, do you think the truck is running too lean or too rich. If it is running too rich I would take a good look at sight glass for the float. See if the float is even moving and if the float level is even close to correct. Some of the floats are made of plastic and if they sit for a long time they will go bad and will sit on the bottom of the bowl and flood your truck unless you keep the rpms way up.

Bob has a good point. I tried to rebuild my hitatchi trying to resurect my truck, and it made it worse. Started off with a new rebuilt hitatchi, then replacing the air pump. Luckily, there was a kink in the hose that went to the mixture control valve (diverter valve), so that didnt come into play. Next was the fuel pump. This was replaced by the annoying ticking square pump I pulled off my parts truck. Once engine was running "well", replaced front brakes, rebuilt calipers, replaced master cylinders, replaced brake booster, and bled brakes. This made the truck functional. Once truck passed smog, a couple months ago, I tackled the exhaust leak, which led to the total distruction of the EGR pipe. Had both ends plugged off, and am driving it now. It still idles like crap, but drives real nice. This weekend, I am going to put a used rebuild 32/36 weber on my spare intake, and see how it does. There are just too many other emission items on this truck that functionally dont work anymore, and those create many headaches. California wont allow me to take the emissions stuff off, so in a couple years when I need to smog it again, I am going to plead my case to a smog referee. If that doesnt work, I will register it in Washington, and sell it there. But until February of 2013, I am going to have a blast driving this 31 year old truck to work and back getting 25 mpg.

Mike
