PostPosted: Thu Oct 30, 2003 12:49 pm
Does anyone know how much me putting a stereo system in there is going to wreak havok with my alternator. I was wondering if i am going to need to put in a capacitor or if my alternator is going to be able to take the beating, I am running 2 800watt 8in subwoofers on a 240watt X 2 amplifier. Let me know what you think.

Thanks.

I'm not really sure about the answer for your question NrdCouple , but i can tell you that when i offroad at night in my 80 luv , i'm burnen 1000w's of candlepower full time. Sometimes i use the winch , using more power...stereo , brakelights , marker lights etc...I have never had a problem..If ya really want to go mega-power , get one of those high output alts from jc.whitney's, Ya' might be able to rock the whole neighborhood :lol:Though now that ya got me thinken' ....i have heard of a stereo causing total meltdown 8O

you can go with a cap or not. i ran 2 10's off a 1000 watt amp. it's not good but i'll work. it starts to get bad when you need to use your headlights, wipers, etc. i ran thoses 10's in there for about a year and never really had a problem. i'd just get a cheap 1/2 farad cap. that should work just fine 8)

The one thing I would recommend is upgrading the alternator. This has been discussed here before and its actually something I'm going to be doing as soon as I get a chance. You can opt for a couple things, one is get the larger LUV w/air conditioning alternator which puts out like 5 more amps and fits in the stock location. The good thing about this option is that its really simple, no modifications are needed, and its cheap. Option 2, which I would definately recommend to you especially considering what you want to run, is to upgrade the stock alternator setup entirely and go to a GM alternator. You can trash the external regulator while you're at it. I can give you more info on that option if you want. Just post a reply. Hope that helped a bit...

a 240watt amp should not bother you too much, in my 98 sonoma i had 2 12" run by 600watts, with no problems, however with my new system, i have 1200watts pushin 2 10" MA Audio subs with a 1 farad cap. the new system is definatly needed a cap. i believe that the rule of thumb is for 600-1000 watts, 1/2 farad cap, 1000watts and up at least a 1 farad cap. of course other things could apply, such as what brand cd player, what brand amp and subs also, as well as if it is for sound quality, or SPL.

Jeez! All I have in my '73 MG Midget is a Cassette/Radio which cost me $15 with speakers NEW. Total output is probably 1/4 watt      . Why have so much power in the stereo? My son gane me a nice CD stereo for my truck, but I plan to just install standard speakers, if there is such a thing now. I don't listen to loud music but I do want to be able to understand what is coming out of my speakers without fear of breaking them. So, what do I need to look for?

oh and rick about your question on speakers, i bet you would be more than satisfied whith a pair of 6x9s and maybe a further pair of 4" speakers. This set up will give you alot of volume but will give exelent range while also being able to just be quiet. And about speakers, you cant get better than infinity. 8)
