I have a slight problem with my 4x4 Luv.
The Transfer Case is leaking were the front drive shaft enters the Transfer Case.

I hope it is the seal (start with the cheapest, easiest part first)
1981, 2.2L Diesel Shortbed 4x4

I need to know if anyone has changed the seal before and what is involved with it.
If anyone has changed the seal, let me know where the seal was picked up.

I have not looked to close at the transfer case but where do you add fluid to it and what kind of fluid goes in the Transfer Case.

well i have replaced uncountable numbers of these on full sized rigs and i looked at my luv its not too much diferent from a chevy. Just unbolt the pinion and slide it out and the seal should be right there. Try schucks(or checker/kreagan) they have been able to get me the parts i need.

Do you know if the seal can be replaced from the outside or do I have to drop the whole Transfercase, take it apart and install it from the inside??

what about the fluid type, is it just gear oil, or does it require a special kind?

Mine is leaking right now actually. I bought the seal for about $6 at Napa Auto parts. there is 4 bolts on the back of the transfer case, Inside will be a spacer, about 1" nut of the out put shaft. Problem is that nut is impacted on very tight. I tried to get it loose with a breaker bar and didnt get it loose. (no leverage on Jacks/blocks) called a tranny place got estimate ofabout 50.00 to install. They highly suggest putting a stainless steel sleeve on output shaft so it wont ruin the new seal (makes sense) I use 80/90 gear lube. In the cold North Dakota winters i thin it down with either kerosene, straight 30, or dura LUbe(works great quiets down tranny) On cold winter mornings gear lube gets very thick! To fill i found it easiest to take out the gear shift (remove boot, 2 bolts dump in Lube!!

actually when i swapped fluids i consulted the old owners manual (yes i still have it  ) The transfer case and 4speed are one piece (this was the prototype to the isuzu MUA), and as such they have one resivour for fluid. The 4x4 trannyies take 30W motor oil, whith the 2wd 4speeds take 80w90, and the autos take ATF.
