Ok First off

79 Luv Weber Carb No PSI REG, OFFY, everything else stock...

So ive been trying to get this thing up and running got all of my stuff back to stock after trying to upgrade dizzy with no success.. I go the thing to run for a while it would idle fine but under load it would back fire and then die... After it died you couldnt get it started again... That was awhile back moved it back into garage now if I hold the key into the start posistion it will not start but he second i let off it starts right up runs like crap for a couple minutes sputters and dies... try and do it again will back fire and start when i let off key.... I added a BS inline PSI guage to see what i was getting from pump... While its "running" it reads 1 PSI and after it dies reads 5-6... so im thinking do I need to add the regulator or is it timing/fuel mixture... I know there was just a post on this smame subject but didnt get really anything out of that thread that would fit whats going on with my rig...

ANY THOUGHTS?

have you changed your fuel filter? 1 psi while it's running doesn't seem like enough flow to supply the carb. After it shuts off it can build up enough through a clogged filter to get that much psi but the volume might not be there when it's running. Hard to check timing if you can't get it to run but the backfiring might be a timing issue. Also check your spark plug wires....it's possible if you have done anything with them that you have one crossed.

Funny you mentioned the fuel filter i pciked one up on the way home yesterday. Going to throw everything on this weekend. Threw the battery charger on trickle so hopefully be done and ready to go tomorrow. Still cannot find a 0-5 PSI guage looked every where in town gonna do a little online shopping today.

check your pump diaphragm #36 on the weber diagram and your power valve #14 some times when the carb backfires it will blow the rubber in the diaphragms on the webers...

When ever I have experienced a car that starts after the key is let go, it has a wiring issue. Get the test light out and go check the positive side of the coil. Key on it should light up the test light. Key to start test light should stay lite. I your case I assuming it will go out. On your coil you have two wires on the positive side. One wire is from the ballast resistor and should have less than 12 volts, @8 volts, and another wire that is only live when the key is on, and this wire has 12 volts to help start the car. This wire could be broken and shorting out and grounding the coil when the key is at start or it might be place on the neg side of the coil, making the coil only work when the key is on an not in start position. Hope this helps.

As far as the not starting until the switch is turned from start to run our trucks have a ballast bypass mode. This gives the coil 12V when in the start position that is triggered by the ignition switch. The relay that controls this is in the relay panal on the right rear firewall, there are several relays there, fuel pump, ballast bypass and vacuum switching relay. Sounds like it is dissconnected or removed. There should be 2 wires going to the positive side of the coil, one from the ballast and one from the bypass. Ben has the wiring diagrams on the site, have a look at them and that should answer your question. Its hard for me to explain all of this in a post so grab a soda and read the diagrams.

X3 on the ignition bypass circuit. As for the 0-5-psi pressure gauge, check vacuum gauges as some of these have a 0-5 psi scale on them.
