Hey All,

I picked up a 1979 LUV last summer to use as a light work truck for help in the solar business. I bought it off of a lady who owned it since new, and had only put 45,000 miles on it. The truck ran fine when I purchased it. I did a basic tuneup with fluids, plugs and filters. A couple of weeks ago, the truck essentially lost all power. It has a real hard time accelerating, and shudders when you first put any load on it. At idle, with no load, RPM come up nice and quick. But as soon as there is load, it bogs down. Symptoms sound very similar to madaro-man's recent post: viewtopic.php?f=5&t=19726.

I've tried various solutions, and am ready to part with it if there is a buyer in the area. I am located in Eastern MA. The truck is RWD and yellow. The previous owner put in a tonneau cover with snaps. I welded up a ladder rack for her. Other than that, it appears stock. The stock AM radio is still in it and working. So, what would you guys do? Try to fix her, or pass her off to someone with more time and money?

I'd fix and keep it. It is probably something minor. I doubt the eng. is bad. Maybe carb. or a vacuum leak, something minor.
Is it automatic trans.?

I you have a fuel pump issue you will have those symptoms.
Remember also that if you have a charging issue ( Regulator or Alternator) your fuel pump relay will shut the fuel pump off. (Its a safety issue). It is also possible to have fuse problems that cause charging problems that then shut the fuel pump off.

That truck looks like it is in real nice shape. That is a rare thing up here in the North. I wouldn't get rid of it. Good luck with finding the problem.

Alright, I am going to change the fuel filter again as well as the cap, rotor and points. I seem to remember reading that there is a second fuel filter - where is it? I only know about the one on the driver's frame rail, near the rear tire.

rondog - It is a manual 4 speed.

80chevyluv - It doesn't appear to have any charging issues. The battery maintains a healthy level. Also, if the fuel pump were shut off due to a charging issue, wouldn't the truck die as soon as the carb bowl was empty?

My truck did something like that when I first purchased it. I couldn't get over 40 mph. It was the fuel pump. The fuel pump moved a little fuel, but not enough to handle a load. Try a new fuel pump, they are pretty easy to replace. Keep the truck. Good luck.

New rotor, cap and points installed with no change. I set the point gap to .018" - is that where people normall put it?

I'm going to look at the fuel pump and fuel filters next.

if there is a second fuel filter it would most likely be inline under the hood. best way to find out for sure is just follow the fuel line when you change the other filter out and see if you can find another one. also i dont know about the luv but some carbs have a screw in fuel filter right on them where fuel comes into carb

The second fuel filter is kinda like a big secret, it is inside the fuel pump itself. The end turns off, out pops a filter.
