I know this question has been asked many times before, but I'm going to ask it again. What can be done to the 1.8 to make more power? I know about the carb conversions and headers and such, is there anything that can be done internally to improve performance? Does anyone make high-performance cams for the 1.8? I'd like to upgrade to a V-6 one day but I don't know that I'll ever have the time to do the work so I'd like to know what I can do to the 1.8 and just drop it back in. Thanks for any info or opinions you can give.

You can upgrade the cam, if you can find one. The one I'm puting in is from Crane Cams, but is new old stock. I just lucked out and found it.

Thanks! I don't really know what I want to do with this yet, but I'm getting some pretty good ideas.

Where in Oklahoma are you? I'm originally from there, but have been gone for about 10 years now...

I live in Wagoner. It's a pretty boring town, but the lake is just down the road and that can be fun sometimes.

Brother, I'm from Coweta...

I grew up skiing on Gibbie...

I also used to ride an old Honda Trail 80 in and out of the waterside over there. Damn, there are days I miss that place. However, after seeing what I've seen, I don't think I could ever live there again. I'll be back home around Christmas, maybe we could meet up sometime...

What about just dropping a Toyota 20R and transmission in the LUV. The radiator should work and minor engine mount mods along with the tranny mount should do it. I haven't done one, but for more power, it seems the cost to get the stock engine 'pumped' up would be the same or more than a good old 20R. Again, just my 2 cents.

a 2.4l 22R would be a better swap, since the motor superceded the 2.2l 20R in 1981 and was available in the us until 1995. the engine has practically the same dimensions, since a 22R block is essentially a bored/stroked 20R. wouldn't matter what tranny you used, since 20R and 22R trannies were pretty much the same

i'd say it'd be a good swap, because parts are easy to find and dirt cheap. if you felt like wiring up an ECU you could dump a 22RE in there, with fuel injection. a weber carb suits me just fine though 8)

the motor would fit in there without too much work, probably would just need new or modified engine mounts
