I'm taking the air pump off cuz it leaks oil and I resent california for making mine have the whole emission thing and cat converter. But I also want to take off the air manifold and all those weird hoses that look like fabric or something. I've never done anything like this so when it comes to plugging up the holes so I don't have a vacum leak, do I have to have a bunch of bolts with something on them or am I jamming something in there or what? Anything helps guys I really appreciate it in advance.

Year/Model would help.

If local hardware sells metric remove the manifold & fittings, take it down and match a metric nut to the fittings then plug holes with same size bolt doped with hi-temp silicone.

I chose to find a bolt that fit inside fittings in place of tubing, brazed in place, threaded fittings back in with silicone.

It's a 79 Mikado. So what you're saying is putting silicone on it like anti seize for sparkplugs?

Make sure it's not pipe thread plugs you need rather than metric thread bolt. JimmieD means hi temp RTV silicone which creates a seal. Also you will have to do a dance to pass California smog, the A.I.R. pump is an obvious thing any tech will see is missing, especially if you remove the manifold. You might try just removing the belt to the A.I.R. pump and putting it back on for smog checks, that's what I did to disable mine (although I have a '72, they don't smog it but I didn't want to waste the fraction of a HP spinning that A.I.R. pump).

Yep, what he said!

Mine's '75 and smog exempt, that's why I suggested you post year model. Almost nobody successfully 'beats' the California Smog regs.

Only way that works is a 'Gross Polluter' exemption, not that easy to get.

Thank God I'm out here in Colorado! I think I can pass emissions without all that crap on there. I just want to clean up the engine. What I'm really worried about are vacuum leaks. I just want to take off anything I don't really need. A list would be nice :) But I think if I take off the air injection thingy, the pump, and the hoses, I should be allright.

One other thing, I took all that stuff off mine, every single smog related component. I don't notice any difference whatsoever with the stuff removed, no increase in power at all. Mine's a '75 and the head is not crossflow design, but still doubt you'll notice a difference. It will leave less parts to fail, but only EGR and air pump.
