What would have gone bad inside my alt to cause overchargeing? Ive replaced the external regulater with a new one but ive still got 16 volts at the battery at idle. :?:

I don't have a LUV schematic to look at, but the regulator should have a Field wire connection. This Field wiring senses current draw in the system and helps regulate voltage accordingly. A broken or shorted or disconnected field wire can cause alternator to give full output because it doesn't sense actual system draw. Trace that wiring and you may find the problem.

Most common cause of electrical problems is a bad ground.

Also check battery cables including peeling back a bit of insulation on cables at battery lugs to look for corrosion.

If you have the stock alternator setup, the voltage is sensed with the white/red stripe wire at the regulator plug. There should be battery voltage here at all times, if not the regulator will think the battery is low and overcharge the battery. The field wire is fed 2-12 volts from the regulator depending on how much charging is taking place. 12 volts is maximum charge.
If you disconnect the field wire plug at the alternator charging should stop.
