I just installed a remanufactured holley 5210 carb I bought off ebay. It runs like a bat out of hell but won't idle very good or at all. I checked for vac leaks. none that I could find. checked float level and drop, both were good. the only way I can keep it running at idle is to crank the idle speed screw up to about 1500rpms. Even then it is sometimes rough with some missfiring. the idle mixture screw seems to do nothing. i think my idle jet or idle air bleed are clogged or something. Does it sound like I'm on the right track?

Seems so. Did you check the needle and seat. Does all the gas run out of the carb after letting it sit? It would be hard to start till the fuel bowl got gas in it.

well I thought I had no vac leaks but everything kept pointing to that. read on here last night about someone who had a leak for the break booster. Sure enough sprayed carb cleaner on that fitting that connects to the intake and voila. Bad news is that I also seem to have leakage around intake gasket at cylinders 3 and 4. :(

Sounds like the needle is not seating... Fuel is leaking past it. It will do what you are saying. Fill it with gas and let it sit on the driveway, work bench or such.. DO NOT leave it on the kitchen table... You gona' be in big trouble. see if it leaks out there.

Plenty of gas still in the bowl when I took carb off. I took off the intake and there is a definite gasket problem between 3 and 4. I am thinking that the idle circuit in the carb uses vacuum to pull fuel mixture through that little hole below the throttle butterfly. If I have a large vacuum leak, maybe not enough vacuum to pull the mixture through untill I open the throttle enough to start the primary circuit. Let me know If my thinking is off........

Sorry, I just realized that I should have posted this in "drive train upgrades" and not "stock trucks!"
