OK, this is a stupid question but: Which way does the thermostat go in?

Does the big part with the spring go down, into the manifold, or does it go up, into the thermostat housing?

The spring will go down in the manifold.

I highly recommend testing the new thermostat before installing it by putting it a pan of boiling water to make sure it opens.
I have had several new ones in the past that were defective.
Just because it's new doesn't mean it's good.

When I was about 17, someone taught me that the 'tent' goes up and the 'spring' goes down. I think there was some sort of off color analogy that went with that lesson... lol
