Ok well attempted a simple tune up on a 80 Luv 4x4 1.8

Changed wires, condenser, cap, rotor, changed the oil. Err I know I didn't cross the wires. And I placed the new cap in exactly the same place as the old never moved the distributer ....jezz how basic can u get but she's barely running and running rough.....In case anyone noticed I didn't mention changing the plugs... thought I had a spark plug socket but didn't, so I figured I'd change the plugs tomorrow...I was already set up at the shop and didn't want to close up for that so anyway also my book said the motor takes 5.7 quarts of oil that sure sounds like alot for a 1.8 anybody have the real spec for that?? Or any other ideas?? :(

You didn't happen to wire the cap backwards did you?
That was what was wrong with my 79 when I got it.
Someone had put a tune-up on it,and when they wired it they wired it clockwise instead of counterclockwise.

I heard one of my friends mention something similar once and he said the autoparts store gave him the wrong condenser. Don't know if it's true, but maybe try the old one again?

Also, if you did anything to the points, it will change the timing.

Well Thanks guys lets see I'm about to limp her back to my shop or try to and try what you said.....putting the old condenser back on if that doesn't work then the old cap and rotor I noticed right of the box the rotor they gave me was longer but thought "well maybe that's ok if it works with the new cap" However it may not have and may have cracked the new cap so putting the old parts back on (process of elimination right? :) Basically through the process I'll try try all of your suggestions as I go and I'll let ya know what I find..... Do you guys know how many quarts of oil these 1.8 's take my books show 5.7 dang that sounds like alot for a small engine? I thought it may have been a typo but checked the other book (Both Clymer's) and they're the same :(

Oil is 4.2 qts with filter change. Make sure the insulating washers are back in place at the condenser wire connection. Your right, I would suspect the wrong rotor also.

Wow, that is one sharp truck! Your slideshow about blinded me with all that chrome 8O

Have you considered a electronic ignition upgrade? There are a couple of ways to do it, and it makes a huge difference in the overall reliabilty of the truck. Just do a search here on the site for pertronix, mallory or electronic ignition.

Good luck sorting it out...

On the oil level question, does the 4x4 pan hold more than the 2x4? Just asking, cause they look so different.

YES I WOULD CONSIDER THE ELECTRONIC UPGRADE :)

But your talking to a guy that put the number one wire where the number four wire goes and the number four where the number one wire was supposed to be "Duhhhhh" how tuupid can u b duhhhh
Running better now !!

LOL anyway I did finally think to look in an owners manual and found the correct oil content.... 4.2 You were right on with that one :)
Don't know what that 5.7 crap was all about in the other book guess I'll be writing a letter to them Oh wait they're probably not around anymore err LOL

I will look for those insulating washers tomorrow; I don't remember seeing any so need to check....

Not sure about the difference in Oil capacity in regards to 2 wheel or 4 wheel drive I only have 3 4x4's so no 2 wheels drives to compare to (At least not yet :)

The Chromed out truck isn't the one ya'll just helped me with (However thanks for the compliment :)....and I have not put pics of it in my photo bucket link yet however it is also a 1980 4x4 same color etc. but is daily driver.

Which brings me to another issue regarding the "show truck with the chrome" ....small spots of oil showing up under hood about center of engine...I figured a pcv valve and one book I have refers to there being a pcv valve on these trucks however the parts house said it doesn't call for one .......the truck starts ...runs for a minute ...then dies. It will will do this over and over but won't stay running...any ideas on that one???

THANKS FOR ALL THE INFO GUYS !!! It's a really big help to those of us that can't keep track of four little wires...... lol :) T

My '78 does the same thing. Stock carb. I thought I was the only one with a 'haunted' Luv, guess not...hahaha

On your oil splatter under the hood, here's a thread here by ctmandu on his oil recovery tank. I guess the breather splatter thing is pretty common on this engine.

Lot's of info in here on the electronic ignition upgrade...

Ok on the show truck...it was the fuel pump. Haven't tackled the oil splatter problem yet...but it will soon.

On the daily driver it was a combination of bad fuse connections and faulty wiring. Now I have the new Weber Carb Installed, Fuse block cleaned up, wiring fixed, new Voltage regulator, New coil, New rotor, Insulation washers and new condensor in place etc. etc.

Going back to the shop now to fine tune the carb and the linkage for it and she should be good to go. Next thing will be the electronic conversion project and I'm working on getting the parts for that as we speak. Thanks for all the help and advice guys. It's all been good stuff!!!!!! :D
