What is the best way to flush a fuel tank? I just purchased a 79' 4x4 Mikado and it had sat for over a year with almost 11 gallons of gas. I pulled as much of it as I could, it was a nice shade of orange. Now I've got new gas in it but i'm still having problems with the crud in the tank. Do I just drive it till it cleans itself, or is there a better way?

You can drop the tank out and have a radiator shop clean it out for you. They can even put a coat of sealer in there to prevent the rust from coming back.

I had the same problem on my 80 4x4 when I bought it. It was so bad that it had pin holes all the way through. I took the tank off and dam at all the hoses hooked up to it. I had trouble finding one so I bought a fuel cell and put it in the bed and just bypassed all those hoses. The only thing about rust is once it starts its hard 2 get rid of. Did you replace both fuel filters after you drained the tank?

Well I stole the tank off of my other luv for the time being. there aren't any holes in the other one so i might try the radiator shop idea.

You can buy tank sealer and a piece of chain, and clean and line the tank yourself.

http://www.jcwhitney.com/autoparts/Search?catalogId=10101&storeId=10101&sku=tank+liner

If it's already off, just get a 6ft long piece of (welded) chain and then roll the chain around in the tank to scrape off all the rust. Turn it upside down, sideways, whichever way you can to get the chain to scrape the entire inside of the tank. Two people works well so you don't bend it all up...

(If you are nervous about fumes/sparks, rinse the tank out with water first, but let it dry completely before putting the chain in there.)

Then pull the chain out, rinse it out, and let it dry. Finally, cover all the openings and pour in the tank liner. Roll the tank around just like you did with the chain inside to make sure it all gets coated.

Not sure how much a rad shop would charge to clean it and coat it. Anyone know?
