 Post subject: Tranny noise
PostPosted: Sun Apr 20, 2003 7:48 pm
OK, so while I'm out driving my '80 4X4 for the first time in years, there is this really noticeable whine coming from the tranny. It isn't so bad in the first 3 gears, but its really loud in 4th. Is this normal? Its been a while (years) since I have driven a LUV, and I cant remember if they were loud like that. There is no noise when I back off of the throttle, but when I'm driving in 4th and get to about 50 or 60, it really starts to come on loud. Any thoughts?

I don't think I've been driving mine long enough to really qualify an answer, but I'm sure someone will have an idea or two. I still can't get over how well your truck came out...

Good luck!

Have you checked the gear oil in the tranny to see if it looks clean and up to level? Maybe it's because of it sitting for so long the tranny needs to get lube into the gears. You need to run the truck long enough to heat the tranny up so the lube will thin out and flow easier into everything in the gearcase. Give it some time to lube itself, just dont go nuts driving it hard until you get things well lubed. It would piss you off bad if you broke something cause it wasn't sufficently lubricated.

That's what I have in mine, and I haven't noticed a problem. (10w30)

My stock tranny was making that noise too. Only mine was real bad in 1st and got quieter as you went up, 2nd, 3rd, 4th. I drove it till it quit. Turns out one of the bearings on the lower shaft went out. It finally disintegrated and the lower shaft inside the trans was just bouncing around in the case. Made some nice noises then for sure. :)

At the time (around 1988) bearings for the trans were like $95 from Chevy. I ended up buying a whole trans from an import shop for something like $200 and got a 5th gear too.

I used to use 90w gear oil in my stock tranny. Never had any problems with it. I filled it up thru the shifter on top of the tranny. It made it real easy to remove the boot and 2 bolts. you can pour straight down into the trans. I'd pour a little at a time and check to see if it came out of the service plug.

OK thanks for the replies. I did change the oil completely in the tranny, since we had to replace the tail shaft seal on the T-case. We washed the whole thing out with gasoline, then let it dry and filled her up. Do you thing the 90W gear oil would be better right now? From the posts it does sound like I may have a bearing wearing out on 4th....

You guys are right about service manuals calling for regular ol' engine oil for the tranny. I have a GM shop manual and it calls for the same. I think I may just go ahead and swap to some heavier gear oil though.

If you washed out the tranny with gas, It's most likely dry in certain areas of the tranny. I'd drive it around some more to see if the noise goes away.

Hey guy's, I used to have the same prob with mine, I ran 85-90W for about three month's and it slowly got quieter. Then I put non-detergent 30W and a bottle of lucas oil stabilizer(engine honey) and the tranny was never heard from again. It may be my imagination but I noticed when I switched to 30W That I had more acceleration too. Hope this helps...

Its pretty simple to change the oil in the tranny. There is a large bolt on the bottom of the tranny. That is your drain. It will be a 27mm. Also look on the right side of the tranny and you will see a bolt the same size about 2 or 3 inches up the side of the tranny casing. That is the "service hole". You will need to get this bolt off as well, since the tranny is full when the oil gets to this hole. Make sure you can get this service bolt off BEFORE you attempt to drain the tranny. :) Drain the fluid, and replace the drain bolt. The easiest way to refill the tranny is to remove the shifter from inside the cab. Just pull the shift boot off, and you will see (or should see) another smaller boot. Pull this up and it will reveal two 12mm bolts that hold the shifter in. Remove those, and you can pour the oil in from that hole. As you are adding oil watch to see when the oil starts to flow out of the service hole. The tranny is full at that point, and you can put it all back together. :)

By the way, I changed mine tonight. I put in 85W-140 gear oil and some transmission treatment. It made a small difference, but I will see how well it does for a few months. The worst that could happen is that it goes out, and I just get another. I also got new exhaust today, and it did make a difference, but I can't really tell how much better it is, since my carb (i think) is acting up. See my other post. :\

OK another update in this saga (it seems).

I replaced the lube in the differential tonight, and it didn't really seem to help much. I did notice that there was alot of play in the drive pinion shaft. I think my front bearing in the differential carrier is worn to hell (crap). There is approximately 0.15" to 0.20" of play in it, this seems excessive to me. Can anyone tell me if I can replace this bearing from outside the carrier, or do I have to remove the carrier from the axle housing in order to get the bearing out?

I remember a friend in the 70s bought a cutlas that really looked good and seemed to run good....but after a couple of weeks he pulled the oil pan and...it was full of sawdust! I think that might be one reason they came up with the lemon laws..If you have never heard of this before ..BEWARE or aware of the oil in a car or truck before ya buy it! Im not sure but i dont think many people or carlots do the sawdust thing anymore.
