I know some of you guys have removed the foam/vinyl cap in your trucks. Here's my question: How is it attached?

Is is just glued on? Could I transfer a good one from one truck to another without destroying it during the removal process? Could I use a heat gun to remove it? Or a putty knife?

The dash thing in the '79 is a one piece (well it was when it was new) but the one in the '78 is almost perfect and is a two piece thing. I'd like to move the one from the '78 to the '79.

Suggestions or photos of a removed one would be appreciated.

You have me confused, the 2 piece one?? Is that one with a cap?? If so I would say it probably isnt in very good shape underneath it. As for removing it, someone else might be able to tell you how to get it out in one piece, but mine I removed 15 years ago and it just crumbled into pieces as it was so brittle and that was a lonnnnggg time ago. Here are pics of my dash replacement (towards the bottom of the page). Good luck!

you want to do it when the son is out and its hot or warm (softens the dash just enough to dot shatter it) then remove all dash parts, ash tray, radio, glove box, vents and gauge cluster... then start at the bottom pull the clips from under the dash (sometimes they are there sometimes not) use a putty knife and start slipping it under the dash and work slow eventually it will pop off..oh and remove the dash pods on each side of the column... dash is glued on but by now its brittle and easy to get off... hope that helps or you can call or ill see if i have time and can give you a hand but its not that hard to do.. Also the 2 peace is a dash with a cap

Thanks guys. So it looks like the '78 probably had a cap installed at some time, that would explain why it's still in decent shape.

Doesn't sound too hard, I should probably wait until a little later in the spring/early summer to try it. I think the one in the black truck will probably just fall off.

Any suggestions for adhesive when I put it back on?

Mine came w/ this removed... but I'd have to say there's a 100% chance you are going to totally destory it if you remove it.

You shouldn't plan on taking it off and doing anything with it other than filling up a garbage can.

I got a dash. It's all in one piece, and I will be photographing it later. I plan to have a list of items in classified later. Later.
