This is all provided you have everything else in order, vac, fuel delivery etc good points, fire etc.
If you have AC, I think you have to remove and plug the vac advance to the distributer.
First advance your distributer a little advanced, back n forth listen to how the engine settles and idles, then adjust your idle screw til you have about 1100 rpms(warm). Pop the throttle linkage a few times to make sure it settles there, I noticed my fast idle for the AC could sometimes hang it open a few hundred rpms. Then start turning and counting(screw turns) your mixture screw clockwise until it starts to run crappy, but not til it dies. Make note how may turns... now count back ward to where you started from, turn & count counterclockwise until it starts to run crappy again. What you want is somewhere right in the middle of those 2 numbers(think the book states 2.5 turns open from almost closed), then one final tweek of the idle screw to your satisfaction. And pay attention to how the engine sounds, and throttle response, it should 'vroom' while you quickly hit the throttle, not slight bog then vroom. Tuning these is not tricky, but can be a little picky depending on your level of OCD. Me... I tended to retune mine based on the outside temp and if it "just didn't sound right"
Then I opted for a Weber, and like to keep mine idling at about 1000-1200, seems to be more responsive. To me anyway
