Ok so ive done all that I can think think to do. After i replaced the carb this weekend my truck ran like a champ for a day and then it started acting up again. Idles great runs good until 4th gear around 55mph, then it starts to cut out like its starving for gas. Pull over let it sit for a second and usually will recover for a while. Twice this weakened i couldn't get out of second without it acting up, after i went into a store and came out the thing ran like a champ. Hard to describe but it acts like its bogged down and the pedal doesn't do anything to fix it.

The only thing that I can think of is a vacuum line acting up or wiring some where. The guy that i bought it from replaced the tank because the other one went to crap so im thinking that there could be a blocked fuel line or something.

Just so you know this is what ive done so far.
Ive replaced; Fuel Filter Fuel pump, coil, plugs, plug wires, distributor, Distrib Cap, points, got the timing right and nothings worked so far. So I figured got spark and started on the carb. I replaced the carb.

That sounds like classic fuel starvation symptoms, though bad points can act similar. If you haven't looked at your filter for a while since you replaced it, try taking it off and pouring it out into a clean container. Be sure to pour out the inlet. That way you can see just what kind of crud it has caught since you replaced it. If you have one of the clear ones, you can also just look in it too of course.

Barring a plugged filter, I'd guess plugged lines. Unhook the outlet line from the pump and drain it into something. Then unhook at the carb and blow it out backwards with an air hose. I usually wrap a towel or something over the other end to see what it catches, just again to confirm if crud in the lines is your problem. Then Just work your way back with the air hose, pull the filter outlet and the pump inlet, blow out, pull the filter and blow back into the tank. Be sure to remove the gas cap when you blow into the tank or it will spit gas back out the hose at ya.

My money is on a clog in the tank pickup tube. Blowing it out may help for a while, but the crud will still be in the tank so you may have to drop the tank to get it cleaned out.

If your fuel tank is dirty and needs to be cleaned and you take it to a radiator shop to be rodded out, be sure you get them to line it too. I had one cleaned once and a few weeks later it was dirty again.

Just my 2ยข

When I first got my 1980 Luv it did the same thing you are descibing,,,it was indeed trash in the tank, dropped the tank, flushed it out cleaned out lines, new filter and back on the road again !!!! My wife had a a1978 Pinto when I first met her, as long as she had over a half a tank of gas it ran good, once it dropped below that it would cut out, sure enough the tank had crud all in it.... Hope this helps, I'm about 100% sure it will....

My 79 was behaving the same way and it turned out to be a dead yellow jacket in the line from the filter to the tank. It was big enough to fit through the fuel line, but when it got to the filter its head would jam in the end of the inlet tube. I'd pull the filter loose and find little or no crud in it, but I couldn't get fuel to the pump. I knew the tank was clean because I had swapped in a replacement before I got the truck running. Finally found it when I started replacing all the rubber hoses and it fell out. It is amazing what can find its way into a fuel tank that is sitting if you don't tape over every little port on it.

You can clean and coat your own tank, and save a few bucks. There are liquid tank lining kits available online (I got mine from JCWhitney). Drain or siphon all the gas. Drop the tank, remove the gauge sending unit and any other peripherals. I think there is an interal fuel filter in there somewhere? Let it sit for a day or so to evacuate any fumes. Get a 4-6' long piece of chain and drop it in there and shake & tip the tank, and roll the chain around for a bit. Keep tipping the tank upside down to get rid of the crap. Do this until your arms are tired, or you are satisfied with the cleanliness. You can even vacuum it out at this point, or wipe it down with acetone inside. Let it dry and pour your liquid liner in there. I had the best luck by bungee cording a thick piece of carboard over the sending unit opening, so I could turn the tank a full 360. Basically, you are trying to coat the entire iside of the tank. You can peek inside the cardboard and with a flashlight see if you've got it all. I poured the excess out the fill tube, and recycled it with a second coating a couple of days later.

I did about 4 of these on various Ramblers. It takes some time, but I was very happy with the results. Usually only about the top half is cruddy, (there's usually been fuel in the bottom half for 30 years), and the rust flakes fall to the bottom every time you hit a bump....

800xl, a hornet in the fuel line? I bet that was bugger to track down...*grin*
